Fedora, Redhat and Soundblaster

Hi all.
I have a SoundBlaster 16 PCI card. When I boot the computer up the sound will not work. Apps like XMMS look like they are outputing sound but I hear nothing. When I open up the Volume control for Gnome and change the volume or Pcm (just a little will work) the I get sound. It did this w/ RH 8 and 9 and FC 1. I use Gnome and I honestly can't remember if I had the problem w/ KDE.... But it seems like I did. It also seems as though I had this problem when I was using Mandrake 9.1, but again, I'm not sure. Anybody else seen this or know how to fix it?

This may seem silly, but have you checked the volume? I think out of the box, volume is off.

I have one option click somewhere to start the sound server on startup. The Vol and Pcm are both up to where I should hear something. Neither are muted. Is there a specific option somewhere you where talking about?

The only option I use to get sound in RH/Fedora is the "sound server on startup" option in the sound menu like you said. That works 99% of the time...

Did you try playing a test sound in the System Settings/Soundcard Detection menu?

I have done the test sound/autodetection. If I haven't adjusted the volume I can't hear it. If I have I can hear it. If I say that I can't hear it then it tells me it will turn the sound off and quits. I was wondering if there was a way that I could tell the volume and pcm to go down one notch then up one notch. That way I could write a script and put it in one of the startup files. I think I'll start a new thread for that one.

Have you tried another sound card? It sounds to me like it could be a problem with the hardware since you've had the same problem across multiple versions and distributions.

I have sort of solved this already - http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=132533
.

I don't think it would be hardware related. Or not altleast broken hardware. It works just fine in windows.

Now I have it when I log into gnome the sound will get altered and it works just fine.

Re: Fedora, SB 16 PCI, es1371, sound problems

I had similar problems with my SB 16 PCI (es1371) card in RH9 and FC1. I solved my problem by installing ALSA drivers.

Hope this helps...

I tried that recently when I installed 2.6.1 and was unable to get it to work at all. So I went back to OSS. I'm content with the way it works now. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
