FEDORA is craptastic

The piece of crap won't even install (it just reboots the computer automatically when it's about to launch the installer after booting from the CD) with a SATA hard disk

The hardware
Asus P4p800 (springdale chipset)
Intel Pentium 4 2.4ghz
512MB DDR Ram
Samsung 52/24/52 CDRW
Samsung spinpoint 80GB
Hercules Fortissimo soundcard
D-link 530TX+ NIC

I know linux is a piece of shit like you all say, but please there must be a way to install this with a computer with a SATA hard disk

kesara3k 08-18-2004 10:30 AM

Did it show any error msgs?
Explain more about the point that it reboots...

Beavis 08-18-2004 10:38 AM

no - no error messages
it just says loading the kernel (i think it's about to load the installation). It only shows the first two normal messages - then restarts

kesara3k 08-18-2004 10:59 AM

There are some issues with SATA drivers & FC-2.
You can change SATA to legacy in the BIOS.
Then try to install again.
If it works then turn it back to SATA after installation:-)
If it doesn't work Fedora is not supporting your SATA hard disk:-(

ok thanks

You may also want to refrain from calling Linux a piece of shit next time too. It kicks the crap out of Windows.

totally agreed... I am a linux lover now. But used to be like the guy above. Truth is, I only hated it when I couldn't use it....;)

In some things, yes, but it's nowhere near to being ready for use by everyone, and it only seems to be going farther away rather than closer. RH7 was beautiful, RH8 blew, 9 was ~ok~... the FC1 rocked, and FC2 is the biggest disappointment I've had since I booted RH8. Really, it has been. I've been debating between going back to slackware, or trying to update RH7 to the current program.

Personally, to the starter, if you're having problems with FC2, try a different distribution. There are a lot more "finished" products out there that work better from the get-go than this. I recommend Slackware (yeah, my slack 9 box was about 50x easier to get running smoothly than this attempt at FC2) or Debian. Maybe even Gentoo.

Well, it works fine for me, so maybe it's not Fedora that's craptastic. 'Tis a poor carpenter who blames his tools.

WMD 08-23-2004 08:53 PM

Core 1 > Core 2. Not to sound like a troll (I'm a Slack user ;)), but FC2 is just evidence that Red Hat wants to use it's desktop base as guinea pigs for testing their pride and joy, RHEL. I bet RHEL is great and all, but I'd like to see Red Hat put out a good stable desktop Linux - RH9 was on the right track at the time. :)

It's all good!

Your motherboard has serious problems with fedora core 2. That's the main problem

actually, I believe it is the other way around... ;)

kostason 08-24-2004 10:09 AM

Well, Fedora Core 2 has a problem installing on a ASUS P4P800 motherboard. This is a known bug.
To sort it out check the redhat's bugzilla
Code:

https://buqzilla.redhat.com
.

The bugs number is 121819.

Check comment #122

I hope I was of some help.

Well, tough words, Sir, but the truth is: you did not do your homework. The issue with your motherboard is well known. So for you, Sir, who just knows strong words and nothing more:

Download:
http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/asusp4p800-boot.iso (17.5 MB)

Burn it, boot with this CD and install Fedora.
