Fedora FC3 --How do I change minimum username length

I just received another very nice 24-drive 6TB file server running Fedora FC3. Unlike other servers, though, it wouldn't let me use my normal username and insisted that my username be 6 or more characters long. (Using useradd). I've never seen this behavior before and I haven't been able to find a thread about it anywhere. I can't find any configuration file that looks relevant. Has anyone else seen this problam and fixed it?
