Fedora doesn't detect modem
 

First, let me say I just installed Fedora, and I am a complete Linux newb. Any help is greatly appreciated.

AMD K6 @ 450 Mhz
320 MB RAM
4 MB 3DLabs Permedia 2 3D Accelerator
Intel V92 HaM Data Fax Voice Modem

The modem is in my second PCI slot. The network wizard thing I ran didn't detect it, and I don't know where to have it look to find it. My display is screwed up, so in addition to using the internet for whatever, I'd like to download some new drivers for the video card. Also, as I've seen in other forums, people have been asked to paste outputs, but as far as I know I have no way to do that, unless I can put files on my Windows partition, because I don't have a CD-R, no internet connection, and the floppy doesn't work. Help please ;D

When I couldn't connect to the net with Linux, I just got a pencil and paper and wrote down everything to post here then typed it out (long and slow, but it works).

As for the modem, check to see if it's supported in Linux. I would assume so since it's a hardware modem. It could, however, be a "winmodem" in which you'll have some problems connecting. More information on these can be found here:

Your best bet, if it's a winmodem, is to get another modem that has drivers for more than one OS. Modems are cheap these days and you'll be glad you did. :)

Alright, I found an Intel 536EP V.92 Modem, and the intel website lists linux drivers for it. http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...*&submit=Go%21 I don't know which one to use, or how to get it onto linux. Is there any way to access my (FAT32) Windows 98SE partition from linux? After I connected it a config tool came up during boot and it says it configured it, but it still doesn't work, at least not the way I'm trying. It's in DOS COM3, so that would be Linux COM2? Help please, I want to get linux on the internet :D

After poking around a little more, I found a lisintg of my PCI devices, one of which was:

Given the "Unknown device," it leads me to believe it needs drivers... so like I asked before, any way to access my (FAT32) Win98SE drive? I have the linux drivers sitting here on the desktop ;(

It says SuSe but it is the only known working RPM I can find. And supposedly works on RH and Fedora.

"Intel 536EP V.92 Modem" ... I found drivers on the Intel site, not that I would know what to do with them, and my floppy drive doesn't work... I thought FAT32 was like... neutral ground; both OSes could access it...

Well, the link I gave you was for your original Intel V92 Ham Data Voice modem. As for your drive not registering, how did you partition?Win98 has a weird quirk where it demands to be the only primary partition. This may be why Win98 will not see it. Usually you need to create a Vfat drive to share between the two. Since you can't install Linux on a non-active drive you will need to repartition your existing Win98 Drive. I suggest Partition Magic 8.0 which you can find on Kazaa Lite(49.8Mb). This will take all night probably on your modem. Could I coerce you into considering High speed? Might I also suggest 2000 Professional? You'll never go back to dial-up, I promise. Anyways, good luck!

Haha, I have another computer elsewhere, on cable with WinXP, but I've had no luck with Linux. This computer, however, I was actually able to install and boot it, so it's going a lot better than my past experiences. "This may be why Win98 will not see it." See what? Creating another partition would be difficult... this hard drive is only 6GB, split down the middle. I suppose I could shrink the Win98 a little more, as it has a little over 1GB free, and I don't plan on putting anything else on, but I don't know about the Fedora Partition. How much space do you think is necessary for it?

runs entirely from cd, looks good, performs well and won't use any disk space and you can leave your windows partition intact.

I'm not looking to make this better... I haven't the means or the money. I just want to be able to work with Linux a little. Maybe it's hardware problems on my other computer, I don't know, but I do know that Fedora 'works' on this one, and I just want to get on the internet. D:

Well, check out the Knoppix cd. You may like it. Otherwise just put that first modem back in and put the RPM I linked you to on a floppy , boot to Fedora and run the RPM. Or, whatever. Good luck
