Fedora Core - does it work ?
Last year I tried out about 8 different distros of Linux systems.
I Finally found one that was user friendly to setup, and gave me most of what I wanted. (Just in case your wondering - Xandros)
I was so impressed I actually decided to install xandros on all four PCs on my home network.
Then I got a copy of Fedora Core off of a Linux mag, and thought "I must try this one", as I used to be a Red Hat advocate.
Anyway to cut a looooooooooong story short, after 10hours of trying different settings, I gave up and went back to my Xandros Desktop.
20 minutes later, xandros was back up and running.
Lucky I only tried Fedora on 1 machine.
Why did I try Fedora?
Because it can be setup as a server, with no additional charges, and Xandros cannot be unless I purchase the Business version. This is not to say I won't pay for a good distro, because I have now upgraded (and paid for) Xandros Deluxe edition.
Problems that occurred while I was setting up Fedora included, loss of synchronisation with the hda to several others, including a basic inablilty to (read?) reiserfs system disks.
Any way I'm still looking, so if anyone knows when I will be able to plug in and turn on Fedora core, without the hassles, please let me know.
Thanx
Chris

I have absolutely no issues with Fedora Core 3. In fact, it even works with the Fedora Core 4 test kernel. I just installed it off the FC4 disk1. I think I may have to reinstall my display driver, but thats a piece of cake.

FC issues
New to Fedora and can only speak of FC2.
I have recently installed FC2 on desktop. There are two long time issues that I know about. there may be more.
1. FC2 has problems with altering the hard disk geometry during installation and therefore causes dual boot problems. None if FC2 is the only OS on a hdisk.
2. The Kppp dialer has a problem with autoupdating your ISP address in the resolv.conf file. Therefore, you can connect, but the browsers won't work. There is a fix. open a terminal >logon as root>fix permissions on the resolv.conf file and use editing to delete the contents (don't delete the file).
hope this helps

I'm a noob so I might be wrong, but I'm using FC3 now and regarding your ReiserFS problem I've read that FC uses ext3 only, but you can use it on ReiserFS/XFS/JFS but without official support. Hope that helps

ChrisJefferies: I honestly don’t know anyone who has ever had any problems with FC3. It seems to be the most functional and stable form of Linux every produced!
Just Kidding
Seriously, at least on my FC3 installations, ReiserFS is available for use as a module and should work. If you look in /boot/config-2.6.10-1-770_FC3 (or whichever kernel you are using) and search for “file systems”, you should find ReiserFS listed as a module, along with Ext3, JFS and XFS.
If you continue to have problems, try downloading/installing the kernel source and compile a custom kernel with ReiserFS being loaded with the kernel, instead of being loaded as a module. I would not think it makes a difference, but they did leave out the ReiserFS debugger as it is currently deployed.

FC1-3
I've been running Fedora Core 1 since Spring 2004, and also have Fedora Core 2 running. I use mostly Abit motherboards and the only thing I don't like is having to download Nvidia NForce drivers to get all of the integrated features working in Linux. FC1 and FC2 are both solid, I tried FC3 on my 'gaming' Linux box and had issues with Transmeta/Cedega gaming apps so I put it back on FC2.
That said, I am getting ready to try FC3 out again on a virtual machine ( using VMWare for Linux to run it ) so I can locate and resolve the issues I mentioned above. Fedora works nice, I use OpenOffice ( slow loading ),Fluxbox Window Manager(fast!),USB drive/printer/dvdcd burner, bluetooth, and wireless keyboard/mouse with it with no problems. Hope this helps.

I run FC3 on both laptop and desktop and they have been absolutely rock solid. Previously I used Mandrake, Suse and Ubuntu but I prefer GNOME and easy updating as I'm not a huge techie and not big into compiling this and that.

FC1 VMWare
I have FC1 kernel of 2.4.22-2115.nptl. I couldn't install kernel source files to get VMware work properly. I couldn't find the correct path to kernel source. I searched the default paths, header files weren't there
help needed
thanks

FC3
FC3 has been rock solid out of the box. Suggest that you post exact issues at install with details so you can receive help.

Fedora Core is intended to be bleeding edge. It has all the latest stuff (if you stay current). Because the assumption is that the user knows something about Linux, they tend not to worry about the loose ends in a desktop setup (mostly multimedia-related). If a user new to Linux runs Fedora Core on the desktop, they tend to struggle a lot with getting java/flash/WMV/whatever set up. While they end up getting a good education, it can be very frustrating.
Other distros focus on a more complete desktop experience and simplified system administration (think Synaptic instead of yum). Xandros, Ubuntu/Kubuntu, and Mepis come to mind. They all are more 'finished' for the desktop than Fedora Core
So, they all have their places - choose wisely ;-)

FC3 rulz. Can't wait till FC4 tomorrow! The only problem that I had was because of my ATi card. The built-in drivers don't work, so you have to use Vesa ones which you can't do during the install. I did an 8-bit install. Then, in runlevel I changed my Xorg to use Vesa drivers and then installed the ATi drivers off of their website. Plus, my installation only took 20 minutes.
