Fedora Core 6 Stopping in the Middle of Installation
 

I've installed Fedora Core 6 on my laptop, but wanted to install it on an older Desktop. I just wanted to install Fedora on this machine. Install screens let me use Text-Mode Install on the older PC. I have a 60gb hard drive(had XP on it) and about 96mb of ram on the board. I get past the point of Fedora Core 6 formating my hard drive completely. Then it begins to install the various packages, and stops installing. Gives no warning, just sits there. I even left it for 2 hours running, came back and still sitting there.

Could the Hard Drive be bad? I tried Gparted, and various hard drive diagnostic tools. Gparted says it can't write a label. Other tools say something is wrong with the Hard Drive, but don't tell me what it is. Fedora seems like the only Linux based system that will format the drive. Bios sees the name of the Hard Drive and displays it's maximum capacity(60gb). Even Tested the CDs within the Fedora Installation steps. I'm sure there's some bad sectors, but don't know what I can use to view it. Any help would be appreciated.

if u doubt on ur hard drive, ram or any component u can always check it...there is a tool called as hiren's boot cd.. it contains all the tools for diagonising memory, hard disk etc.. u can always low level format or zero fill ur drive with seagate disk manager... so try it out..

Sorry about that. I skipped that and moved to FDISK from a bootable dos floppy. I removed all Partitions. Then I used Gparted and made 4 Partitions.

Hda1-VFAT (Primary Partition)
Hda2- (Primary unformatted Partition)
Hda3-EXT2 (Extended Partition)
Hda4-EXT2 (Primary Partition)

I wanted to reserve Hda1-VFAT for a windows install later. Hda2 I just left Unformatted, and i'll add something later. Hda3 is where I wanted to put Fedora Core 6. Hda4 I left for an open Linux Partition.

Ran the same Fedora Setup as before. It just stops at the same file while installing. Some Common Lib-i386 or something like that. At first I thought it was the physical hard drive, but since I would be using the partition Hda3 which is away from the beginning of the Hard Drive, it must be the Fedora Iso Image. I used M5sum on the Fedora Disk 1 and it said it didn't match what was on the website's M5sum list. I ran the Disk Check program on Fedora and figured it was ok since it passed that test. I'm going to try and download Bit Torrent or Bit Comet to get the Fedora 6 Iso files. What do you think?

Are u using the same media that you used for installing in ur laptop? or is this a different media? if its the same media and if it worked in ur laptop y not here?? i have a windows installtion disk that works fine in my system having lite-on dvd writer... but wen i use the same disk for installing windows in some of my frnds system with different drives it doesnt work... some files were not copied... so i think there mite be some problem in ur dvd drive... y not try changin it, and then try installing it again??? cos my prediction is that if it worked fine in ur laptop y not un ur desktop system?? if u r sure that md5sum doesnt match then download it once again and burn the iso file in lower speed...

Actually it I tried installing it (Fedora Core 6 Disk#1) the first time and it did not work. That was when I did not partition the hard drives. But I thought it did not work because of a little mark I put on it while taking it out of the drive. That original Fedora Core 6 Disk #1 did install properly in my laptop (unscratched of course). So I figured let me download another iso image (silly me, I shouldn't have deleted the original iso). I decided to remove the partitions and put them back on with Gparted, then try with the new CD. Still didn't work.

I see your point with the drive perhaps being faulty.
I'm going to try using one of my cousin's DVD drives and install it on my pc. But I don't think it will work because I noticed on the scratched cd and the new one I burned, the Fedora Install program stops loading at the exact same point every time. So I'll do 2 things. One, the easy way, use my cousin's dvd temporarily to install the cd. If that doesn't work, i'll try downloading the iso using Bit Torrent. One of the 2 has to work...

If you're going to download a new ISO, why not go to Fedora 7? Support for FC 6 will, most likely, be dropped when F8 is released.

yeeper... exatcly... y do u wanna stick to FC6 wen FC7 is already out.. so start downloading FC7 n install it..

I would download Fedora 7 but, the machine i'm using is a little older. It doesn't have a DVD Drive, just a CD-ROM drive. I tried downloading the Live CD via Bit Comet, but the fedoraproject.org site doesn't seem to be working properly. I have DSL on one of my partitions. Is there a way to do an install online with Fedora? Perhaps a small boot cd which would boot the kernel and read my nic card and connect to the web? Maybe then I can designate which partition to install the Fedora Core 6 or 7 on? This machine doesn't have alot of memory(96mb). Is there an XFedora .iso out there somewhere similar to xubuntu? I really don't want to go out and buy a new cd or dvd rom drive when I can try installing over the web? Any suggestions??

The Live CD is a "small boot CD" which can be used to install a "full" Fedora 7 via the Internet. (That's how I built one of my systems. Just check the "Install to HD" box, do a yum update, and a yum install ... for any additional packages you want.)

There are several locations from which you can download the Live CD, so, if one site seem to not work, try another. You might be able to download the Lived CD from the LinxQuestions "Download Linux" link on the right of the screen. (I say might because I haven't checked.)
