fedora core 6 - Kopete - webcam...

I am running fedore core 6 on a Dell XPS m1210.

my base requirements for any distro for my computers is that I must be able to functionally use every piece of hardware to its fullest, even if I wont NEED it. and in fedora I have finally gotten everything running. the problem is I cnt get kopete to work with my webcam... the irony here is I ACTUALLY WANT to use this one.

the camera is recognized, and useing ekiga and luvcview I can get an image fine. but in kopete all I get is a solid green square for the image...

when I first compiled and installed the uvc-43 module (from svn) it worked! then I rebooted and the next time I went in, I get this.

at first I thought it was a permissions thing but then I realized ekiga and luvcview WORK. Id use them but unfortunately they arent intended for IM use.

also something to know: in ekiga, originally it did not work. I discovered that in it there was a section to specify v4l (video4linux) and v4l2 (video4linux 2) I switched to v4l2 and it just suddenly worked... perhapse something like this in kopete?

ok, I have figured something out,

I ended up reinstalling the OS and after that I installed the UVC driver and then ran:

# modprobe v4l1_compat
# modprobe videodev
# modprobe v4l2_common

then:

# depmod -a

and BOOM it works! reboot and again it does NOT work. So I added the following to my modprobe.conf file:

install v4l /sbin/modprobe v4l1_compat; /sbin/modprobe videodev; /sbin/modprobe v4l2_common; /sbin/modprobe uvcvideo
remove v4l /sbin/modprobe -r uvcvideo; /sbin/modprobe -r v4l2_common; /sbin/modprobe -r videodev; /sbin/modprobe -r v4l1_compat

and rebooted... same thing.

so I ran a "depmod -a" again... and it works again... so as far as I can tell I have to run "depmod -a" to use my camera in kopete. I tried adding it to my install line in my modprobe.conf file:

install v4l /sbin/modprobe v4l1_compat; /sbin/modprobe videodev; /sbin/modprobe v4l2_common; /sbin/modprobe uvcvideo; /sbin/depmod -a

but it still doesnt work and infact if I do that and then run another "depmod -a" kopete shows a garbled image, I have to restart kopete and RE-run "depmod -a"

so how do can I properly do this?
