Fedora Core 3 and WiFi

I am currently running FC3 on my laptop. The laptop is a Sony Vaio with an Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200bg integrated. I am able to find drivers on this link:

Sorry, BUT I CANT LINK. Pm me and i'll link it

But am a linux noob and unable to get them to install. So please bear with me on this since I just installed Linux and it is completely new to me. If you could point me to a link with a HowTo or give me the instructions I need to get them installed and working, I would be greatful.

I have tried with a friend but couldnt get it to work, maybe because were both thick. Also i noticed this

If i start up fc3 with a network cable in it, it works and everything, but if i dont plug in a cable and leave my wireless on, it cannot find either a single OR my card. So i went to Internet Config Wizard and I click "select Other ethernet Adapter. (and i assume that by adapter it means my Intel 2200 bg built in card right?) So i scroll down to the intel adapters BUT mine isnt listed. Any ideas on how to get this wireless card working.

Thanks for taking the time to read about my problems.

I'm not familiar with this card in particular, but this document may help:

http://effortlessis.com/ipw2200.html

Also, there is a detailed thread on FedoraForum about your card:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=27171

This contains many links, including the HOW-TO above. It seems to me that a project on SourceForge (here) provides the necessary driver.

I am a complete linux newbie. I dont know if this will effect my installtion. I dont know how to extract or do anything in linux. Does anyone know of a Distro that when i install it, it almost instantely detects my 2200gb card and makes it work?

Hopefully someone else here can mention a distribution that includes support for the ipw2200 card, but I'm not familiar with one.

In fact, using it with Fedora Core 3 should be as easy as with any other distribution, since (even for a complete newcomer) it is very easy to set up. If you'd like to try it out (that's what Linux is all about, right?) you just need to follow a few simple steps.

As the site I referenced before points out, download the RPM using your ethernet connect (or download it on another computer and copy it using a diskette) and put it in your "home" directory (this is like "My Documents"). The RPM can be found here: http://atrpms.net/dist/fc3/ipw2200/ .

Then, bring up the terminal (the command line) and type these two commands:

Code:

$ su
  password: your-root-password
# rpm -i ipw2200-1.0.0-23.rhfc3.at.i386.rpm

Some stuff should scroll by and then it will be installed. Then, your card may show up in the Network Configuration window you were mentioning in your first post. If it doesn't, you can follow the rest of the directions on that site:

Code:

# depmod -a
# modprobe ipw2200

Now it should certainly show up in the Network Configuration window. If you get stuck you can post back here.

Andrew M 06-14-2005 02:24 PM

The very first one should work well. That is, this one here.

Im actully, thinking of Installing Fc4 because ive heard that makes my card easier to setup and such or I have to do very little to set it up, which would be nice.

Okay guys: an update: I went ahead and upgraded to FC4 but it does something new OR I just havent noticed it doing this. At the boot loading screen, it says ipw2200 not initalized or present, and then something else but i forgot, Any ideas?
