Fedora Core 3 and Intel i810 graphics adapter
I did a fresh Fedora Core 3 install (not upgrade) and then
found out that FC3 has issues with Intel graphics adapters. I have an Intel i810 embedded graphics adapter on the motherboard. So I have problems with KDE and Gnome. In console mode everything is fine. I am not an expert, I cannot compile things. Is there some way to solve this problem? Thanks. |
Give some more information.
I assume that you are having problems getting X up and running. What errors do you get? Can you post your xorg.conf? Or xfree86.conf, whichever you are using. There are text commands for configing X For Xfree86 it is xf86config I think. For xorg it is xorgconfig I think. I have FC2 on an integrated intel vid adapter, I think all that I had to do was lower the bits per pixle. |
In previous versions of Fedora and other Linuxes I've seen problems with i810 chipset video drivers. Usually this is if the actual video chipset is i845. The problem appears as inadequate colour depth or inability to set a decently high resolution. If yours is one of these read on, otherwise stop now.
The i845 problem appears to stem from the chipset failing to allocate enough memory to video so that there simply is not a large enough memory window to adress enough pixels or depth of memory to make a decent job of the screen. There seems to be two ways round the problem. If you have a Dell machine with recent enough BIOS or any other Phoenix BIOS based machine you MIGHT find an option to enable a Video memory Window size. If its a dell machine you should get an option for 8MB. This will fix the problem. Other Phoenix BIOS machines might well have the same options with results which you must investigate.... You can of course upgrade the BIOS - I did this on one Dell GX260 and the option appeared, and all was well. A Dell GX240 needed the next fix. Otherwise you should try http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.htmlwhere there is a whole bunch of stuff about a patch or two which might help. It fixed my GX240 problem. Googling for 'intel graphics linux patch' gets you a whole bunch of stuff. Good luck |
