Fedora core 2 will not boot after install

New to Linnux so I am totally lost. I have installed the 4 installation CD's, reinstalled for just the Desktop, reinstalled for just workstation, tried F5 rescue, but the system will not go past the following screen. (Side note, hard drive was formatted to remove Win2000 and also had Fedora erase any partition and automatically partition the drive) (computer is a 450 mhz with Pentium II and 256 mg ram) The screen gets to the following and the curser just blinks, never goes past.

Booting ' Fedora Core (2.6.5-1.358)'

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root =LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x1235b7]
initrd / initrd-2.6.5-1.358.img
[Linux-initrd @ 0x40be000, 0x2ec0c bytes]

Please note these same CD's were used by my buddy to install on his computer and he did not have these problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated we have tried most of the windows type tricks that we know.

thanks in Advance for any help,
Rex

it finally booted

I left it at the screen in the previous post for about an hour. I came back in my office and it had booted to the welcome screen and I am now trying to learn and utilize this OS.

thanks,
Rex

Similar problem: won't boot after installation

I'm having a similar problem...

I was finally able to install Fedora 2 on my old computer (166mhz). For the installation I only had to use the first 2 cds. The entire installation went smoothly, no problems at all. And after about 1 hour when the installation was complete it said "remove all data/cds from drives and click OK to reboot". So I did that but after it reboots it just goes to a screen that appeared before I ever even installed Linux. It says something like "please insert bootable media".

How do I get Linux to boot on start up? I tried looking at some things in Setup (F1) but couldn't find anything helpful.

Thanks for your help.

Did you enable SELinux during installation?

Is the problem still present with the latest Fedora Core 2 update kernel?

Fedora won't boot

My Fedora episode returned when I tried to restart the computer and it took 1 hour for it to reboot. I uninstalled it and installed Red Hat 9. My computer is 450mhz and I believe that the minimum hardware requirements are 400 for Fedora, so that may be your main problem.

thanks,
Rex

What is SELinux? Sorry, I'm new to Linux and my hardware skills are too good yet.

Like I said, the installation went fine, it's just that Linux doesn't start when I turn the computer on. I'm not sure if I need to change some settings on Setup, or type some commands or what...

Really? I tried to find a list of Requirements for Fedora 2 the other day but couldn't find anything. But maybe you're right, 166mhz may be too slow. However Linux doesn't even start, it's not like it loads slow or anything because I can't get it to load at all. Does anyone have a link to a list of Fedora 2 requirements?

Thanks

EDIT: Never mind a list of requirements.

When you see above lines, you are still within the boot loader and have not even started Linux. The next line which you should see nearly immediately would be:

Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.

When it takes an hour for that line to appear, your problem could be a hardware or BIOS problem. No idea why the bootloader would take an hours to load the Linux kernel, which is only a bit bigger than a Megabyte. Uncompressing the kernel takes only one or two seconds, even on slow hardware.

Try disabling DMA in your BIOS. And when you're booted, take a look at /var/log/messages. Search for error messages.
