Fedora Core 10 (updated) - Is there anyway to hide users on login window?
 

Hi, this is my first post here and I am new to linux - i am ok using the terminal as long as i have specific commands to run. anyway though - as the subject says - i need a way to hide all the users coming up on the login window - i just want it to ask for a user name. Is there any way of doing this?

should be easy enough, look for something like "login window" or such, which desktop are you using?

anyway, once you find it you can select which users should show up, or not

I use KDM ( kde 4.2 )to start up Gnome .

ok, so anyone got any ideas on how to hack this so it dont show them? - also i dont have a login window option in any menu

seeing as gdm is in the process of a ground up rewrite , I decided not to even try . and used KDM instead

will my gnome desktop be all the same? (eg running gnome and not kde)?

i don't mind using kde for 'starting up' gnome because that sounds like it uses kdm and then launches gnome from it-but i then have all the power of kdm - eg the user name thing i was asking about before?

sorry if thats a stupid question because the origional statement of "i use kdm to start gnome" seems pretty self explainitory - but i just wanted to make double sure because as I say im new to linux and don't wanna muck about with it too much (yet) - ill do that when i know what im doing with it.

p.s. - sorry i meant kdm not kde

switching to kdm only affects your login screen...

you will need to boot into kde at least once to configure the login screen and behavior ( like the 10 min time out for the screensaver and the " power settings"

but if you just want to use the default kde settings there is no need to do that

All you need to do is make one text file and add this text to it
and copy/paste this into it
then reboot

ok thank you for your help - i've decided that this is exactlly what im going to do - change my login thing to KDE (that is right isn't it? - I have some confusion in my mind whether it's KDE or KDM - or are they just both the same thing anyway?) also sorry just to claify one thing though - you say if I want to configure the behavor - eg screensaver etc - that i should log into kde at least once - sorry to ask this if its really obvious - like it gives me a straight choice at start up - but I haven't yet installed it - but is there a proper way to log into kde to do this?

once that question is answered I will know what im doing properlly and wont need to carry on this post anymore.

once you run
and reboot
there will on the GDM ( gnome) login window an option to select gnome or kde
after you type in your password BUT BEFORE YOU HIT ENTER
boot into ked and make sure it runs
then add the desktop file and reboot
now using kde to start gnome you will need to set ( in kde ) the screensaver settings, the 10 min time out before the screen locks . Also the login theme must be set in kde .

the ked settings for the screen lock WILL BE USED for Gnome
