Fedora Claim to Fame

Most of the better known Linux distros have some attribute or vibe that they claim sets them apart from others. For example, Debian = conservative but rock-solid stable: Ubuntu/Mint = user friendly, even for newcomers: Arch = for experienced users who want to build their own and like a rolling release model: etc.

In my exploration of various distros via Live USB I have come across Korora, which is based on Fedora.

Is there a generally-held view of Fedora's place in the Linux world?

Fedora is likely to have bleeding-edge packages in it and is used by Red Hat to test new technologies also. Linus uses it so it must be OK. I've used it myself in the past and if I wasn't running Debian Sid I'd consider it myself.

Some helpful info here.

I tried Fedora awhile back, I believe it was fedora 14.
I am curious about giving it another spin, from what I have read in the link given and
other articles, Fedora doesn't take a backseat to any distro.

I've been using Fedora ever since (I think) F9 or F10. Since I started with Mandrake/Mandriva, I was comfortable with KDE and stuck with that. There were a few complaints when Gnome (the default DE for Fedora) went (ssssllllloooooowwwwwwlllllyyyyy) to version 3 and seemed to regress a bit while KDE powered ahead with some innovations. Honestly, since then, the KDE users (like me) have had more reasons to complain than Gnome users. The latest incarnations of both DEs have been stable enough for home and office use, even if you wouldn't exactly want to base your livelihood on them.

But few of the complaints have to do with Fedora itself. It DOES stay near the cutting edge, and it does serve as a test-bed for Red-Hat. But if you know that going in you can accept the challenges that occasionally come your way, or you can wait a bit (seldom more than one release - 6 mths) for things to settle out. The worst I've had to deal with was when the nVidia drivers were not updated with the kernel (before akmod made that worry go away).

The upside is that the updates to things like Firefox are in the repos pretty quickly and it seems like a wide variety of hardware configurations is supported.

I've been using Fedora since before it was Fedora and called Red Hat Linux. I appreciate keeping up with what's new in software, Fedora is pretty leading-edge. And for the last few releases, Fedora does not deserve the reputation of breaking on upgrades, I just did a no-brainer upgrade from Fedora 23 to Fedora 24 using dnf, went without a hitch.

Anyway, obviously I'm a fan of Fedora

My own view of Fedora is that it is a bleeding-edge testbed for RHEL. I have used it and in my experience it worked quite nicely.

It's rapid release cycle is not to my taste; I prefer stable over bleeding edge. But that's just me and is in no way a criticism of Fedora.

The advantage of using Fedora is that it has a lot of sanctions spins. Here is a list from

There are also multiple Remixes, which are addressing first time users. The remixes include extra background images, extra software and all of the extras pre-installed and tested.

LIVE ISOs (try before you install)

Chapeau Linux http://chapeaulinux.org/
Korora Project https://kororaproject.org/
RFRemix (Russian Federation) http://mirror.yandex.ru/fedora/russi...es/RFRemix/24/

One word about the Russian live remix. It starts out in Russian, but from the top right corner,
open the system tray with the icon consisting of a wrench and screwdriver.
Within the system tray, (top right) is the region icon. Click on it to select your language (I selected English).
I then completed my evaluation of this spin and proceeded to do an installation. I have 5 disks, so on two other disks I installed Korora and Chapeau.

I use gnome and mate.
With Korora, you get a lot of extra software geared to the disktop use. You get beautiful coloured backgrounds and a generous list of themes. Korora also provides Mate, KDE and other options.

Chapeau Linux follows Korora in richness. It has integrated "steam". If you are open to playing games, steam is there, ready and waiting. Both Chapeau and Korora are enjoyable to use. And yes, every update to Fedora is also an update to the three mentioned Remixes and the spins.

Fedora has special spins geared to security, to medical, the Cloud, containers, Software as a service (SoaS) etc.

If you are only going to use Fedora to browse/email from/to the web, or do programming, go for it. If you want extras, with nothing taken away, go for a Remix.
