Fedora and Scientific Linux

Has anyone used Scientific Linux. It is apparently Fedora but older and really stable. I have never used Fedora and therefore did not really know how to use Scientific Linux. I could not find a package manager anywhere. I know better than to look for syanaptic but I could not find a "YUM" anywhere. Maybe I have the wrong idea of how Fedora software is updated... I am asking about Scientific Linux because I have tried to isntall FC6 five times now. I have read a ridiculous amount of information from the Fedora forums on how guys have tried to pare the DVD installation packages down to the barebones to get it to install. I have lost interest.

Blag is awesome, by the way, it is a Fedora based Distro. Please tell me what you have experienced with Scientific Linux and how you update the software.

thanks

B

I tried Scientific because I thought it might have more science/engineering/math applications available in its repositories. I was wrong, I think it has fewer. I ended up getting rid of it because I didn't like it. I did keep its GRUB menu image...it's an atom, kinda cool.

It's a desktop and is very much like Fedora. Scientific is a Red Hat derivative just like Fedora. As a Red Hat derivative, it uses yum for updates. I think yum is pretty easy to use and does a decent job. There are several GUI frontends for yum but I always used it from the CLI. You can also use apt.
