Fedora 8 :: X turns off vga lcd monitor

When I tried to install Fedora 8, it turns off my monitor when it goes to the graphical mode. I see a blank monitor with a blinking power light. I tried all the options to turn off power management, but to no avail. I gave up and installed it in text mode. When I start the X server, again it turns my monitor off. I used an xorg.conf file from another distro, only changing the "nvidia" driver to nv. Same problem.

I would be greatful for any advice on this one. It would be especially nice to use the graphical installer, if possible.

Thanks!

BTW, I am using a XFX GeForce 8600 GT card with 256 Mb DDR3. I am using the DVI -> VGA adapter to run my Samsung SyncMaster 170N LCD monitor.

The system is running Intel e6750 Core 2 Duo on a Asus P5K-E Mobo.

I run Fedora 8 on my work machine just fine with the same graphics card, but I am driving a DVI monitor with it.

Thanks,

I think I have found the problem. Apparently there are some problems with Fedora 8 nVidia drivers (and ATI as well) that cause these sorts of problems. I am running Mandriva 2008 on the same system, and nVidia drivers detect and install perfectly. For Fedora 8, the temporary fix is to enter "vesa" as an option when you start the install. This will let you use the full-up graphical installer, which is much nicer. When you finish, your system will run using the vesa drivers. You must then go back and re-configure xorg.conf to get the video the way you want. At some point, I will try to manually install the nVidia drivers. I hope this helps anyone who has experienced this problem.
