Fedora 8 "What A Mess!"

What a Mess!
First of all, i waited 2 months for Fedora 8...
Ive spent the past 4 days attempting to install Fedora 8 on a laptop, because, well fedora is the only Linux OS worth having on a machine... I have attempted FTP installs from 10 mirrors, each install halted after a hundred or so packages with one of the two error messages:
! couldnt find package "" at mirror.bla
! package corrupt
Ive looked into all possible things or so i thought..
I dont think IPv6 had anthing to do with it but i disabled it...
I have a cable modem at 3mb/sec , I'm plugged directly into it with a patch cord.. i always tell Network Setups to Auto get the settings via DHCP, so thats what i did..
Noticed only one thing:
All other OS ive had like "Mandrake 2007.0", assign me the hostname 128.23.0.79.ald.charter.mi or something like that...
FEDORA assigns you the hostname "LocalHost" becuase a hostname MUST start with a letter (128.23.0.79.ald.charter.mi) doesnt work
SO
I downloaded the Fedora 8 DVD ISO from a ftp mirror with the "WGET"
checked the MDK and SHA sums
Booted the ISO and installed Fedora 8
FINALY!!
THEN.. it took a half hour to get X up and whala! EXCEPT after reboot after reboot FEDORA doesnt connect to my internet...
Thanks Fedora for the wonderfull week!
Now ill reinstall Mandrake becuase i know it works... damn

Who'd have thought you'd be a Mandrake user.

Smile Anaconda bugz

Hi

I think that quite a few people have trouble with the 8th... :-)

I'm waiting for this bug to get fixed...

Maybe if you look in the bug list you can find something that matches your problem?

Sorry I had a go at ya before mate, wasn't helpful or right. :P

I have been thinkin about tryin fedora lately, as I think it looks cool. I'll have to try it in a vm. If only there was a small net install cd, that'd be perfect.

You can use the rescue cd to do a network install.

If you read the install notes while upgrading, it references "test 3" version information ... makes me wonder if anything is different between test 3 and the final Fedora 8 ... at this point I can't manually configure a wireless network ... for years I would just save off my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* and keys-* files along with /etc/modprobe.conf and /etc/modules.d/blacklist, install my ipw3945 driver, and daemon, and connect just fine to the wifi network I setup at home ... this time I can't use ipw3945, had to use the built in iwl3945, had to use NetworkManager because manually ifup'ing the network interface isn't working with sysfs call errors being reported ... and of course NetworkManager has the encrypted network bug in it ...

So now spending time trying to figure out what alternative to NM to use ... oh and is there any friggin way to configure compiz-fusion? I mean seriously, enable-desktop-effects isn't going to cut it for me.

The only nice thing so far, the avant-navigator-window, AWN ... a mac-like applet ... but even that came from the development repo, so it isn't baseline in F8 ...

You can install compiz-fusion with yum - however I went this route, and all is fine:

Code:

cheers,
