Fedora 8 booting to text login

It was working fine, then I was tweaking the GDM settings to allow GDM through VNC for remote administration and now it will only boot to the text mode. I can run startx and it will go into Gnome, but I want it to do it automatically. Where do I start debugging this problem???

The first thing to check is /etc/inittab. /etc/inittab is where the run levels are defined and the default run level set. In Fedora run level 5 means to run a GUI starting with gdm. Check /etc/inittab to see if the default run level is set to 5 and run level 5 is set to start a GUI. The line defining the default run level looks something like this:

id:5:initdefault:

If the default run level is OK then look to see what run level 5 starts. This will be a line that looks something like this:

l5:5:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 5

From this line you can figure out that when Fedora sets run level 5 it starts a script called /etc/init.d/rc and passes that script a parameter of 5. So if /etc/inittab is OK then look in the script that inittab calls for run level 5 and see if you can find anything wrong with that script.

inittab may do nothing to this issue.
i have encountered this problem long times ago , it seems that some config-file broken occured. check the system log for help is a good idea to find the problem.
