Fedora 7 Installation problem

Hi people

I have 2 computers with Fedora Core 5 installed and working OK. On one computer I have installed Fedora 7 without any problem and it works fine.

On the second computer it starts to boot from the DVD and the comes up with the message
"vesamenu.c32: attempted DOS system call"
I have tried all the options given by pressing the F2 and F3 keys. I get as far as the Blue Screen just before the media check then everything hangs.

I suspect that the installer can not find a driver for the monitor which is an Acer 77c. The monitor works well under FC 5.

The DVD drive is OK because I have installed Fedora Core 5 from DVD on that computer before.

The installation DVD is OK because it worked on the other computer. I made a copy of the DVD, checked it and still get the same problem.

How can I get beyond this point.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Alan

What version of the DVD are you using? (Live or not)

Check the BIOS to make sure 'boot from CD' is before 'boot from HD'

The BIOS is set to Boot from CD first, before the HDD, and was OK when I installed FC5.

On the other computer I inserted the DVD and restarted - it went straight into the installation procedure. That was what I wanted on the second computer.

I get the same behavior with the Live CD and the Emergency CD. It seems to be a problem with graphics compatibility and ATA compatibility. I have a Matsonic MS7308E system. It works fine with FC4,5,6. No luck with F7. What system do you have?

I think you are right - I have FC5 on the old computer with an Acer 77c monitor and FC7 on a newer computer with an HP pavilion mx70 monitor. FC7 will not load onto the old computer.

I was just wondering how I can force FC7 to use a "default" or "standard" monitor - at least until it had finished installing.

You can try the nofb option if you think its a graphical problem, or you can do a text install.

Thanks. I can live with a text mode installation. What about the ATA problems? Any idea? The Live CD throws these messages:
"ata2.00 exception ..."
"ata2.00 cmd ..."
"ata2: port failed to respond..."
"ata2.00 revalidation failed..."

Try this for the XP section of your grub.conf...
Code:
title Windows XP
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
If that doesn't work for you, return here and paste the results of these terminal commands...
Code:
/sbin/fdisk -l
cat /boot/grub/grub.conf

First check wheather your ethernet card is detected in network device option by typing system-config-network in terminal. if your card is detected click on the eth0 tab and click edit and give ipaddress manually eg 192.168.1.2 or give the ip address given in windows xp, save the configuration and restart your system. now your ethernet card should work. connect to internet and open add/remove programs it will work, i too have the same problem.

You can get past the vesamenu.c32 error by typing linux at the boot> prompt.
