Fedora 7 and Vmware Workstation

Now that Fedora 7 has moved to kernel 2.6.22 it is not able anymore to get Vmware Workstation 6.0 working. Vmware Workstation 6.0 doesn't support kernel 2.6.22.

I get some weird error when compiling the modules while running /usr/local/bin/vmware-config.pl

And have you applied vmware-any-any-update11 from http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/ ?

I did try vmware-any-any-update11 but that did not help.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you..........

You might want to try the latest vmware-any-any-update (a new 112 version was released on 23-Jul-2007).

It sounds like it is time to build your kernel making configuration choices for your hardware. I'm running the current vanilla (kernel.org) released kernel source 2.6.22.1 without any problems. The Red Hat / Fedora folks typically 'tweak' the vanilla source and provide kernels based on a wide base of systems. Sometimes this is not the best configuration for certain hardware and building a custom kernel is the better way to go.

I normally build custom vanilla kernels (using the released kernel source from kernel.org) for my hardware, in one case I make different choices for the x86_64 CPU then the default used by the Red Hat / Fedora configuration. The results are the kernel actually works with my hardware, if I use a standard Red Hat / Fedora kernel the system crashes or panics shortly after booting is complete.

FYI: I'm running the earlier version of VMware Workstation 5.5.4-build 44386 without issues.

O Sorry I fix the problem already, I replaced the vmnet.tar with one patched for kernel 2.6.22 I downloaded from http://linux.nextmail.ru/vmnet.tar.bz2

I replaced the vmnet.tar file in /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source and I was able to run vmware-config.pl again.
