fedora 30 - can't get higher screen resolution on HP laptop

hi *;

I have installed fedora 30 on my HP laptop and cannot get higher resolution than 1600x900 although it should be capable at least 1920 x 1080.

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 16 x 16, current 1600 x 900, maximum 32767 x 32767
XWAYLAND0 connected 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 310mm x 170mm
1600x900 59.95*+

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 5500 (rev 09)

Can you please suggest where the problem could be?

Thank you

HP laptop ,which one?

Some come with that and the other in most cases, and with the proper drivers it maxs out screen rez and I think you really need to research your HP specs to get screen rez to see its actual max rez.

I speak from owning and have owned a few HP 's where I needed to swap out screen and cable to get that 1600x900 HD ...

maybe do a little reading up on hardware limitations.
4 example
HP Elitebook 8460P Laptop
Quote:
Internal:

14.0-inch diagonal LED-backlit HD anti-glare (1366 x 768 resolution)
14.0-inch diagonal LED-backlit HD+ anti-glare (1600 x 900 resolution)

Hi BW-userx

spot on.

Mine HP laptop comes with various screens,
I thought I was working with different model. I could have sworn it is capable to get 1920 x 1080..

I had to dismantle the laptop, check the screen serial number just to found out 1600x900 is its max.
Silly me, fiddling with drivers, trying to blame fedora..

Thank you for saving me from frustration

(thread can be marked as solved)

You have to mark it solved yourself in the upper right hand link says mark solved.
and np , happy to have saved you hours and so of frustration.

it might be capable of that higher rez, You'd have to look in to it further. The HP Elitebook 8460P I have it came with 1366 x 768 screen and cable, I went to ebay and found a 1600 x 900 screen and HD+ cable then swapped it out. Just need to figure out how how to dig for parts in Ebays search, and find HP parts number page for the laptop in question.

I guess my elitebook 840 Gen3 is a bit newer or fancier, as it does 1920x1080 - but it also has an Intel Skylake integrated graphics card which might have a better driver. I'm also running Fedora 31.

This is not an uncommon thing, especially on laptops, in my experience. Looks like in your case, it was just a misunderstanding. I can tell you that it is dramatically easier to get things like X and wifi workign correctly on Linux laptops compared to how it used to be.
