ok i have read the the other threads and none of them have worked. I have recently just did a fresh install of fedora 2. i was using rh9 with no problems but i figured i would try this one since it has the 2.6 kernel and new 3.2.2 kde.
while installing everything it did put out the sound test but once i got it all installed and booted up i get no sound.
my sound card is a via 82xx built on the motherboard of a matsonic 8417e

Volume levels are all set to maximum. Except when I run alsamixer, PCM slider is disabled, volume set to 0 and I can't change it. And when KDE is starting I hear 'pop' sound - similar to when you turn on your amplifier. But then again, no sound.. And during installation, my soundcard was detected and I heard test sound.
Thank you! Been playing for a while with kmix advacned options and everything is ok.
(For those with similar problem: run kmix, click 'advanced configuration' a try to UNcheck
buttons till you hear sound)

I had this same problem. I thought it was because I have been trying to re-install xmms and other multimedia players all day (I'm having an mp3 codec problem) and all of the sudden I realized I no longer had any sound at all. I think it happened sometime after I had logged into KDE for the first time.
All I did to fix it was open kmix and uncheck "Audigy Analog/Digital out jack" under advanced. I got the idea from the last post. Thanks!
First, wanted to say thank you to this thread. I was having the same scratchy no-sound after installing Mandrake 10 Official. After reading this I went to the Applications/Multimedia/Sound/Sound recorder/File/Run Mixer and Muted the microphone...voila I am back in business! Listening to a CD right now to test it.
You can also get to this option by entering the command
gnome-volume-control
/edit: Looks like you can right mouse on the upper right corner speaker icon and choose Open Volume Control to get there too.
from this thread i've been able to get the sound to work by playing with kmix and then was able to play cd's after changing the xmms plugin for cd's to digital instead of analog. My problem is that i'm still unable to play ogg files with xmms or rhythmbox. Any ideas on this one?
I was having the same problem using:
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
It took two reinstalls of xmms-mp3 for me to locate the problem but it seems that when I first install xmms and xmms-mp3 everything works fine for that session but then the next time that I login, I get no sound at all. I opened KMix and raised the levels on the PCM Channel and the first of the VIA-PSX and low and behold I had sound.
Yesterday, when I reinstalled xmms and xmms-mp3, I adjusted the levels in alsamixer to fix the problem. I guess I don't understand why there are two mixers that seem to overlap.
Anyhow, my problem is solved now. Thanks to this thread.
