Hello All,
For the past couple of days, every time I login, I get a message on the desktop "1 notification 08:33:37 PM (Just Now) Software updates failed. An important OS update failed to be installed"
At each login the time is at that login.
I have looked at the yum log, the boot log and messages but have yet to find anything that points to the problem.
I can start the software manager and check updates with nil outstanding.

Does anyone know what is causing this, and how it is best rectified?

Does a 'yum check-update' show any updates available? I'm on my first day with Fedora 18 so still feeling my way around things.

No, nothing.
I have re-booted the system a couple of times since my post and each time the message appears, still reporting that it has happened "just now".
Still no sign of anything in log files, that I can see.
It may not be a real problem, but it would be good to at least know that.

I haven't run into this issue, but it might be worth a shot to do a yum clean all. You have most likely tried running yum update from the command prompt. If not, maybe a message will pop up there.

No luck with that lot.

OK, that turned up a problem with the Dropbox repo, which I had already switched off in the software manager.
I deleted dropbox.repo from /etc/yum.repos.d, but the problem still persists.
Here is the result of "yum repolist all" for the system right now...

I am not 100% sure of the name so
Check it with " yum search "

there is a yum package called yum-utilitys
in that is a program called "yum-fixbroken "

that program aught to be listen in the yum error,to use as a possible fix .

No sign of anything like that ...
also a software manager search specifically for "yum-utilitys" and "yum-utilities" didn't turn up anything, nor did a Google search for "yum-fixbroken".
Why aren't I seeing these tools?

that is odd , there are something like 36 yum packages in the base repo

OK, I see lots of yum packages on that mirror site.
Now when I run the software manager and search for yum I get lots of hits, It says "yum-utils-1.1.31-6.fc18" is installed. that is the only one that comes close to the "yum-utilitys" that you suggested.

yum-utils is in /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/ but it doesn't provide a "yum-fixbroken".

My /var/log/yum.log is too big to include (I get a message that the post is too long).

I don't see anything in the yum.log other than installed and updated messages. No errors or suchlike.

you did not use fedup to upgrade from 17

This is new/clean install. No use of Fedup.
I run two discs, every 6 months, or new Fedora release, I do a clean install to 'second" disc, copy /home across, then install all the non-standard stuff, finally swap the boot order.

so you put Feodora 17's home folder in fedora 18 ?
or
did you only copy across your data and NOT the config files

the fedora 17 config files in the home folder might cause all kinds of problems in fedora 18

if you did just the normal user home folder ( and not the root "/root" home folder )

make a new user and see what happens

if you copied the fedora 17 /root home folder over

reinstall

Not sure if this helps but I heard from an old Linux friend of mine today that the Fedora repo files were mixed up for about a week. Not sure if that is still an issue or not. This made a real mess for him.

I have good reason for not installing the new Fedora 18.
I prefer to wait a while and allow the Developers time to get the bug fixes under control-

I would re-install as our Guru; John VV recommends.
Any wise counsel that he has given me has always worked!

I only copied across my data, in /home, which I thought was pretty clear.

OK, made a new user, and when logged in a message pops up with pretty much the same story, but with a different look (I am guessing the new user is in gnome shell, I am using cinnamon) and provides details, which are..."Failed to Update. An offline update was requested but no packages required updating".
This is curious, suggests that something is set to automatically update, not something that I have knowingly set.
Does this give a new clue?
