I hope everyone is well. I have been using Fedora since 12 and have been very happy with it, but recently (two days ago) upgraded to 15. OMG!
While the Gnome 3 interface is very cool, it is almost maddeningly buggy. You cannot access any sort of settings to adjust the panel properties, it does not play nice with compiz-fusion, and atypically of the last three releases, experiences an app crash about every five minutes! Anyone else having these problems?
Not looking for help with any particular thing, just wondering if anyone else is having these problems. Am seriously considering downgrading back to 14 and giving the guys at the Fedora Project a month or two to work these little (or not so little) glitches out.
We've been running F15 on three machines since beta, not having any problem (been Using Fedora as long as it existed, and Red Hat before that). Take a look at the gsettings command to tweak options. We're not using Compiz with Gnome-shell; it seemed redundant with the existing compositing window management.
I have also been a Red Hat fan for a long time, started with zipslack back in 95 and
have used Slackware, Caldera, Ubuntu, etc. but I really like Fedora. I know it's not my hardware, as I've not had a problem i couldn't resolve till now. I'm sure I'll get over it, but it is weird. It may have something to do with my setup. I am running a dual-boot Win7/Fedora 15 rig, and using Virtual-Box to run an additional copy of Win7 (just so I can tweak in new and interesting ways till it breaks,LOL) in Fedora. It's not that it's so major that I can't use the system, but it is distracting. Thanks very much for the tip about gsettings command BTW!
Again, thanks Macemoneta, i shut down compiz and spent a little time playing with new interface. Much better! A number of the things I want to do are available, just different. It will probably take a couple of days, but I may get to liking this!
It did take me about two days to get used to, but I like it better than the old gnome2 user interface. That may be because I also use Android, and I find it feels somewhat similar. Now I wish Android let me select categories when I open the app drawer.
excuse me, but I just upgraded to Fedora 15 (been a user for years, since Fedora 5, IIRC) - and... this... I can't believe it... this is the biggest crap I've ever experienced... seriously, I'm having the biggest egg in my face ever since I started using computers back in 1984.
Anyway, some... well, lots of questions:
- how do I get the Alt-Tab to behave like I'm used to (no cursor keys involved...)?
- how do I get rid of fancy shadows etc.?
- how do I set the screen to never turn off (reduce brightness)? (I might want to watch a movie...)
- how do I set the number of workspaces?
- how do I get rid of this silly 'Activities' thing in the upper left, and get a panel where I can see workspaces, start programs with a single click, etc.?
- my god, I'm a musician... my computer is useless now... I have to get rid of everything Pulseaudio!
- how do I change window's title-bar (double-)click behaviour?
please excuse me being emotional, but right now it feels like the biggest waste of time I ever had with a computer, dammit, I have work to do!
(I played around with gsettings - but couldnt find what I was looking for)

Install the package gnome-shell-extensions-alternate-tab from the standard Fedora repositories.

I think you need to disable the screen lock and screensaver to do that:
gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-hibernate false
gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-blank-screen false
gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-keyring-hibernate false
gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-keyring-suspend false
gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-suspend false
gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-use-screensaver false
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen true

The number of workspaces is dynamic. You can disable dynamic workspaces with the 'Disable dynamic workspaces' extension from Gnome Shell frippery.

'Favourites in panel' and 'Applications menu in panel' extensions from the above Gnome Shell frippery site.

Pulseaudio has been in Fedora since Fedora 8, I think.

Install the package gnome-tweak-tool from the standard Fedora repositories.

Change is hard, but Fedora is a leading-edge distribution. If you want a very rarely-changing environment, try Debian.

Pulseaudio has been in Fedora since Fedora 8, I think.
Unlike just about any other desktop I've heard of, GNOME Shell actually depends on PulseAudio. When I installed GNOME Shell to try it out, it forced PulseAudio on me, so I uninstalled GNOME Shell after playing with it for a few minutes.

My understanding is that Unity also requires PA. It doesn't seem strange to me that new software requires facilities that went mainstream four years ago.

Tach
i upgraded to fc15 about a month ago and i'm loving it........
i have not faced any serious problem, crash or whatever so frequently as u said........^_^
i even like it more....
Must be a bad day for linux. Seem all of the distro's were rushed out and buggy. F15 has some issues still.
well, IMHO, the bad thing about the operating systems I like(d) most (linux, amiga, aros, ...): they drop their strengths in favor of imitating Windows, or, more recently MacOS/iOs/etc.
Install ...
I think you need to ...
The number of workspaces ...
Thanks a LOT! :-) I might reconsider this Gnome3/MacOS-Clone-Thing. :-)
(While I still think it's quite an offense to build a super-GUI, and then let users dig into commandline/gsettings/install stuff in order to get the tweaks they're looking for.)
But for now it just slows things down too much, and I think I found what I was looking for: Fedora LXDE SpinOff.
Let's see if this works for me.

You're right, I should've remembered this from my earlier Fedora installations and read changlogs before downloading (and ranting ;-)). (And, lol, yes, yesterday I tried Debian, first choice.)
