Fedora 10 and RAM

Last day I install Fedora 10 with GNOME as GUI
When I looked at the available RAM it told me that I have 3.3 GB
This amount is correct.
Than I install KDE suddenly my available RAM drops down to 2 GB in KDE as well in GNOME .
Just to check if it is down by the installing of KDE I reinstall Fedora 10 again with GNOME as a clean install again my available RAM is 3.3 GB
But I can not find out why.
Can anybody tell why this happen ?

What are you using to determine the amount of ram being used? Try running:

$ free

and post the output here. You should know that linux caches disk reads to ram so over time, the amount of ram usage should go up. That's why firefox or open office start much faster the second time - it's pulling the data from ram instead of the much slower hard drive. It's nothing to be concerned about as the disk cache ram is available to applications if needed. From the output of the above you can tell whether ram is really being used up or if it's just disk cache.
