FC7 Installation Woes
 

Hello,

I just finished downloading the new FC7, and the checksum is also fine and as expected.
I burned it and everything.

But when I am trying to install, it would always tell me that it is missing some packages. I tried all sorts of combinations, even the minimal and default ones. None would work. After formating the system and asking the user to wait till the system prepares, it would tell me that is missing some packages or they are corrupt.

I tried burning the DVD again and re-installing and the same errors!!!

I haven't got an internet connection yet!!! And I haven't added any additional repositories to the package source list. Where is the problem coming from??

One more thing, anyone knows why the file size is so small??? Isn't Fedora 7 supposed to be bundled with Fedora Extras?!

Um... which ISO did you download?
What speed are you burning this at?

Downloaded the iso here at Linux Questions and burned the DVD with Nero Burning ROM at 6x with Verification.

F-7-i386-DVD.iso size: 2767MiB

(but verified only indirectly)

Really sounds like a bad ISO.
Try a different mirror or a net install.

i386 vs x86_64
 

Ensure you didn't burn the x86_64 DVD to run on a i386 processor. The links posted by the last person should work on just about any computer.

I'm sure I got the correct version. Ahh, I just guess the problem might be coming from DVD-ROM drive. I shall check in another PC.

Experiencing the same setbacks as Atwin...

Hoe did you solve it? Did your DVD work on another machine? Did you download another ISO?

My DVD works in a desktop machine, yet fails within a notebook.

Even trying to instal via RIS (Remote Installation Services - Network Install) does not resolve this issue... :scratch:

Can't download a New ISO due to capping limits... Yet, was another ISO image the solution to the problem ???

But in your case NB install
a) DVD Drive defective
b) RAM or CPU and thats no joke

I recognized that problem also, as Wicus001 does and many other.
And always the same suggestions.

Reasons in this row...:
Bad Download
Bad burning Speed causes bad media
or Bad DVD media maybe buggy
Bad DVD-Drive most of the cases
Bad RAM also a source of evil copy errors
Bad HDD same as RAM
Bad CPU same as RAM

Well I managed a complete clean install by burning my FC7 DVD at a lower speed (4x).

I also got the problem due to a defective DVD-ROM drive, which was installed on my friend's PC.

After I tried installing on my laptop, it eventually worked. But for some reasons, I don't know why some DVD drives won't read the FC7 DVD, as I also tried in some other PCs, including the ones in my university.

I guess there should be either a problem with your DVD drive, or as you told me, with your network settings. Try checking whether your network adapter card is working properly and that your proxy settings are alright if you are connecting through a server.

I experienced a similar network related problem on Ubuntu but resolved it by filling in the proper proxy and ports settings.

I have replied your message on my thread about "FC7 Installation Woes."

The main cause of the problem was due to my friend's DVD drive. It just won't read the DVD properly. But this is weird as it would load all the necessary tools needed for install properly including the graphical user interface.

NB. The DVD drive would read any other DVD fine, with no problem including the FC6 Zod DVD.

I guessed the problem might be from some burning error. So, I burned another copy at 4x and tried to install again with the same options. So, I tried a minimal install - gnome interface, games, some multimedia apps and necessary tools i needed for development and music. And I still got the same errors even though all needed packages should have been on the DVD. (I have been using linux since RedHat 7.2, so I know which packages come by default!)

When I got my new hard drive fixed in my laptop, I tried installing the same FC7 DVD with the same installation options and it, amazingly worked fine. So, I can just guess that the problem was coming from my friend's DVD drive or maybe from some defects in his RAM!!!

But later on I re-installed FC6 on his desktop and it worked just fine!!!

Very weird I know!! Maybe it was some RAM related problems, but I can't be sure!!

This is my first question.
Downloaded Fedora Core 7, using Bit torrent, and got a good DVD for the X86-64 version. I am running an Athelon X2, 64 bit, with a 64 bit mother board.

Everything seems to work, except there is no mouse pointer. Loaded Gnome, then reloaded the whole system again, using KDE. Still no mouse pointer. The mouse works. I can see it (the position of the mouse) on the screen using the Control key. I can also see the position clicking and holding the left mouse button and moving the mouse. When I move the mouse over a widget, it becomes brighter, but there is no mouse pointer. I have selected mouse pointers from the mouse control panel, but it makes no difference. Does anybody know what is going on, and how to get a mouse pointer on the screen??

Firstly, thanks for the feedback !

I finally got the solution a minute ago... Here's what I done:-

1.) Re-downloaded FC-7, directly from RedHat (No mirror used)
SHA1SUM exactly the same as previous download
Hmmm - I don't think this is related.

2.) Mounted ISO via Daemon tools and extracted (copied) all the file to the RIS server
Network installation flawed with copy error again !!!
No solution....yet

3.) Burned the new ISO to a DVD+RW @ 2x speed.
Booted from DVD and all went 100%...

Simple, yeah?

Therefore, NO hardware defects....

Network Installs fail due to M$ RIS / FTP combo setup. (ONLY when starting to copy files...) :study:

Slower media burning speed solved the DVD install issue, or could it be that the other 2x DVD's are DVD+R (Lightscribe) and not DVD+RW ??? :scratch:

Ahh. JUST IN - When booting-up FC7 during kernel initialization, the following is displayed:

"Therefore, NO hardware defects...." Ahmmmm

Uncompressing Linux... OK, booting the kernel.
SMP mptable: bad signatue [0x0]!
BIOS bug, MP table errors detected!...
...disabling SMP support. (tell your hw vendor)

Followed with a BSOD (BLACK screen of death)

Hardware - Fujitsu Siemens V2010 laptop with "latest" firmware (BIOS) via their website (dated 2005 - recollecting correctly)

Well... not all burners are created equal
not all optical media are created equal
fedora has always seemed sensitive to burn speed - that said, my FC4 install (wayy back) was burned at max speed... <ahem>.

First: check that you are using the builtin monitor instead of the external port. There is a key to press - on my acer it is fn+F5 but it may be different for you.

In rescue mode:
add "acpi=off noapic nolapic" to the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf
check the driver in xorg.conf - if nv or ati, try vesa.
do lspci and post result.

As for the smp error - I bet you don't have dual processors.
