fc6 opening xine crashes X

Hello,
I'm running fc6 on a desktop (core duo 6600, evga 680i sli motherboard, BFG nvidia 8800 gsi single card). I installed xine several weeks ago and was able to play dvd's, mp3 etc. Suddenly, opening xine, whether as a normal user or root results in an X server crash to the login screen. the xorg.log shows only server startup data, nothing regarding the crash. the following rpm's are installed:

# rpm -qa | grep xine
totem-xine-2.16.2-2.lvn6
xine-lib-extras-1.1.3-3.fc6
xine-lib-1.1.3-3.fc6
xine-lib-devel-1.1.3-3.fc6
xine-0.99.4-10.lvn6
xine-lib-extras-nonfree-1.1.3-3.lvn6

Strangely, totem will open and will play most ordinary video files such as avi, mpg and asf but it will not play DVDs.

I'm unsure how to troubleshoot this. Can anyone give me a clue?

Cheers,

CEG

I've had this problem before in the past, but with a different video card. My card was an Intel815. If I remember right, the crash was caused by xine using an incorrect video display driver. I think you will have to manually select a video driver on the setup section. However, you may not be able to do so if xine crashes as soon as it starts. One way that you may be able to get around is to change your bit display from 24 to 16. Try that and see. Hopefully, this should resolve your problem.

... I've no love of FC6. Gnome would lockup or crash every time I left it unattended too long, played a movie, tried to do anything visually intensive, etc.

... I think I'm married to FC5.
