Hmmm, well let's assume the ROM drives are not the issue and I'll need a full post here of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log from when you have a text boot. Other people have been successful in posting the entire log here before so you should be able to as well. Perhaps as an attachment if it won't let you paste it.

I would like to be able to attach the log file, but blowed if I can see how to do that.
Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb.
Could someone please point me to some info on the LQ site that explains how to attach a file to a reply?

Hmmm surprisingly I don't see that option here either. Strange, wonder how others have posted full X logs before. You got me on that one, can't do much unless I have that log posted here tho

A solution has finally dawned on me.
Included here is the first part of the Xorg log file generated by a boot into text mode. This will be followed by a second post with the second part, each being under the 25k byte limit.
Hopefully that will satisfy the LQ requirements and provide you with the information that you need to see what is going wrong.
I must say that I don't see anything in the log that I would think is sufficient to be causing this problem...but I will be very pleased if you do.

Surprisingly everything looks fine in that log file. Look in /etc/inittab and see what your default initlevel or runlevel is. It should be set to 5. Also, when it boots into text mode, if you log in, can you run "startx" from the terminal without quotes and does it successfully launch X windows?

I thought the log file looked OK.
The default run level in /etc/inittab is 5.
Very early on in the hunt for a solution to this problem I tried 'startx' from a login and although I don't have the exact response available right now, it was something along the lines "display0 is already running", and it didn't launch X windows.
I can switch to the graphics screen using alt-F7, as a ps says that the X server is on virtual term 7.
Could it be a hardware problem...something to do with the graphics card or the screen? Having said that I'm not sure how the screen could affect it. The screen certainly does some pretty noisy and rapid switching just prior to ending up in text mode. With a normal boot into graphics mode, the screen does switch with a 'clunk', but not as dramatically as when the system ends up in text mode.
I should also add that I have reseated the graphics card and the screen cable connections, with no change.
It is still ending up in text mode about 1 to 2 times in 5 boots.
Any clues in the above?

Hmmm so you can switch to graphic mode via ALT-F7? That's a tricky one, X is starting correctly just not launching GUI mode, it's leaving you in console mode. At any point during boot do you see the graphical boot screen showing things loading? Or is it strictly text the entire boot?

Almost always during boot I have the graphical boot screen with progress bar etc.
Only occasionally does the boot screen drop back to text mode, usually only momentarily, then pops back to the graphical. The few times it has dropped back to text mode (lately) the last item on the list has been the HAL daemon, which then gets the OK, and we pop back to graphics.
The fact that I have always had the graphical boot screen has made the final text mode seem quite confusing.
Sorry, I should have initially explained this aspect of the behaviour, but sometimes it takes a while to find out what is relevant and what isn't.

When it boots to text mode, if you leave it for < 5 minutes will it switch into graphical mode on its own? Have you tested this?

I hadn't tested that, but just did.
It sat for about 13 mins after booting into text mode and didn't switch automagically to graphical mode.
Does this add to the clues about this problem?

What this is leading me to believe is some "init" process is not done loading until late in the boot process. Apparently this is causing the graphical boot not to load automatically. And since you can manually switch it using Alt+F7 then we both know that graphical mode works just fine. The trick would be to put echo statements in your init scripts to see what is holding it up since none of the logs are giving clues. This could have been caused from a package you updated, to a faulty video driver.

My recommendations are as follows:
1) Run "yum -y update" without quotes and reboot when done **Does this fix your issue**
2) Update to the latest nvidia driver that is compatible with your graphics card **Does this fix your issue**
3) If none of that fixes it you can elect to debug the boot process by putting echo statements in /etc/rc.sysinit to see what part isn't completing on time or by hitting 'I' during kernel uncompressing to enter interactive boot.
4) You should also run "system-config-services" without quotes and disable any services that don't seem necessary. Your judgement is what I recommend, would be hard for me to tell you what's best. **Does this fix your issue**
5) Last, wait for Fedora 8 to be released and just do a fresh install of that.

Thanks for the detailed advice.
I don't think "yum -y update" would be a good choice for me as I suspect it would require downloads that would bust my limit. I did run it without the "-y" option to get an idea what the total download would be, but it quit with two errors, "missing dependency...".
I have already been down the road of updating to the latest nvidia driver for my card, with no effect.
I think I'll have to try debugging the boot process to see what is going on, and if that doesn't lead me to the solution, simply put up with it until a mag puts out a Fedora 8 cover DVD.
Thanks again for all your help, it is appreciated.
If I find out what is causing the problem I will post the solution here.

What dependency failed when trying to do a yum update? Also what limit are you talking about

I can't say what the failed dependencies were. I was so annoyed when seeing that message. I will have to run it again, but it takes a long time. I think it was a couple of libraries that might be needed by Grass.
The limit is my download limit, imposed by my ISP. I think the last I checked what a yum update involved (a few moons ago) it ran into a couple of GB.
