FC5 won't boot after install

Hi everyone

When trying to install FC5 on new hardware following: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_fedora_core_5 guide for ISP-server setup

with a set-up that looks like this:

Athlon 64 3200+ 2 GHz
MSI K8NGM2-FID
WD RE WD2500YD 250 GB
Arctic-cooling Silentium T2
ZALMAN CNPS 7000B-Cu
NEC ND 3550 - DVD burner
512 MB Kingston Value RAM

and an additional PCI socket Gigalan: NETGEAR GA311

the system hangs after intitial install, that is after having installed all the packages.

The system has completet all steps untill this point: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_se...dora_core_5_p2

When booting after initial install the systems hangs with a black screen and a cursor blinking in the upper left-hand corner.

Does anyone know what might be wrong?

did you install a bootloader (i.e., grub)? can you boot the system with the rescue CD?

I didn't install a bootloader as the system will run 24h as a server, and won't have a secondary OS.

The system can run the rescue CD, but it appears that it "just" installs the OS again.

Can it have anything to do with the extra gigalan PCI card? The internet connection is currently hooked-up to the onboard gigalan.

doesn't matter if it will run 24 hrs. it still needs a bootloader to boot. besides, what if the power goes down and the server needs to restart, or you need to reboot after upgrading the kernel?

there are options you can enter at the boot prompt to boot to your kernel. i think F3 or F5 give you the help screens. it tells you which one, so just read what it says. if you can't boot the kernel, i think you can boot the FC5 CD in rescue mode. then just mount & chroot your root partition and install grub. these instructions might help:
