FC5 - Not Booting up in to GUI

Hi there,

First day using Fedora, and have just installed...

Starts up, goes through all system checks and is fine - stops at the CLI asking for username (of which i have not even created one yet, only asked for a password during installation) - never gets as far as the UI

Sorry if this is a stoopid question - wondered if anyone could help shed light on what i am missing here?

Thanks in advance

That's strange, every time I've installed fedora it asks for username and password. Is it possible you missed filling out the username box, in that case your username could be " ". What hapens if you just hit enter without entering anything?? If it asks for a password, you should be OK.
If it doesn't like that option, try entering "root" it will then want your root password. If that gets you in you can create your user name.
Good luck.

Yeah, i can log in as root without too many issues - haven't created a new user account yet, not sure how to, but i am trying to learn!

If i can login as root, how do i get the X GUI started? Does that depend on me having a user account?

Sorry - probably stoopid questions - like i said, i am trying to learn

Thanks for the help

Configuring the display settings doesn't require a user. You may have good results by running the command: system-config-display

Use the command:adduser when you get ready to add a user, for example:
adduser fred
passwd fred

sounds like you might not have installed X and or Gnome.
try "start x" see what happens

If that doesn't work, cd to /etc, ie

cd /etc

then

ls | grep gnome (or kde if you went the alternative root)

that should give you a couple of instances of the gnome conf files
then

ls | grep X11

that should give you the X11 file.
(In case you aren't aware of it the | on a US keyboard is above \)
If you don't get anything it's probably time to think about reinstalling. It shouldn't be this hard, getting X11 and gnome running should happen without thinking about it.
But if you want to try and recover from where you are, you'll need the help of somebody with more expertise than me! But a great learning exercise if you can find somebody.
