Question FC5 - ls hangs in specific directories from tar ball

I downloaded and installed a program I'm testing from a tar.gz file. If I look at the directory it untars to from the graphical file manager, then its contents, 6 files - display immediately. In terminal - cli mode if I cd to that directory and enter "ls," it hangs. If I move all the files to a temp directory and copy them all back, it doesn't hang anymore. This same file set, particularly the .patch file, hangs other directories when I copy it/them there. The .patch file is only a text file. I've never seen this before. Any clues? If I try to compile (run make) or patch in a directory with those files, that operation hangs as well. The ls command will eventually list the directory of six files after about five minutes! Could one of the files have a format issue that confuses the os?

A couple of things you could check (if ls responds after 5 min.s):

1) Look at dmesg | tail and the SELinux log viewer (forget its name - sorry - should be in the KDE or GNOME menu somewhere) to see if there might be some error messages if you've installed the SELinux tools.

2) Try a ls -lZ of the problem directory(s). Perhaps there's a link in there that's taking a while to be resolved, or (as I suggested above) SELinux has a "strange" setting.
