FC5 graphical login problem
Hi. I'm fairly new to the Linux revolution so please forgive me if my problem sounds trivial to some of you more seasoned Linux gurus.
I have been running FC5 since its release in March. I had recently done a whole bunch of updates through YUMEX. It downloaded a ton of stuff including a bunch of things that were labeled as FC6. Everything seemed to run smooth until I did a reboot. Now, after startup, I am stalled out at the black screen with the cursor still spinning. I tried to leave it for as much as a few hours in case my older AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz was just getting choked up. No login screen though.
I tried to run the FC5 rescue CD, but after booting from CD i get an error something to the effect of "metadata does not match checksum" or something like that.
The next thing I tried was to reload the original FC5 disk. I loaded it and selected the Upgrade option. I chose to create a new bootloader configuration. After doing this, I rebooted, and to my surprise, nothing changed except that it rolled my kernel back.
I do not know what to do now, butI have several files saved on my hard disk that I cannot afford to lose and stupidly forgot to make a backup of first.
Can anyone please help?

hi there and welcome to LQ,
did you try changing to another console using
Code:
ctrl+alt+F1
ctrl+alt+F2
ctrl+alt+F3
....
??
about your data, you can always boot a live cd, like knoppix, mount your partition and save the files somewhere else. your problem is probably related to the xserver. you don't need to worry about your data...
regards,
slackie1000

Thanks a bunch Slackie. It took me a while, but I ended up being able to transfer my important data over to my windows [yuck] partition. I burned that to cd and reformatted my PC. I am now 100% windows free now.

Not to be a grammar Nazi, but please do try to write a little more intelligibly, as this took a moment to sort out. :]
Can you boot from a live CD, like Knoppix, Ubuntu LIVE, etc? This, IMHO, would be your first step in troubleshooting the problem.

It's hard to say. Let us know how Knoppix goes.
