FC5 Boots w/Read Only Filesystem

Hi:

On a previously running FC5 installation, after running Red Hat Setup, I rebooted and the system immediately (before any other services or networking start) attempted to contact the LDAP server @127.0.0.1 (LDAP not set up) and when it could not, apparently went into ro mode. The system finally boots in CLI mode after trying to start services that require rw.

However,
fstab and mtab show the filesystem mounted in rw

but,
/proc/mounts shows /dev/root/ mounted in ro

I cannot write to disk with setup or even vi.

I ran setup and it shows that the LDAP authentication was checked, hence the problem, but I can't write the conf file written by setup.

Can someone tell me which conf file this is?
(can boot from DVD and edit it)

Can someone tell how to enable disk write?

Thanks very much for helping.

I found the config file, edited it in rescue mode and it fixed the problem: nsswitch.conf, removed the "files ldap" and replaced it with "files" for passwd: shadow: and groups:. But I would still like to know, if when booting in the mode indicated, how to switch the system to rw (/proc/mounts => /dev/root/ ro to /dev/root/ rw). Can someone help with this? Thanks!!!
