FC5 - Anaconda install problem x86-64 [Errno 256]

I tried installing FC5 x86-64 from dvd iso, dvd passed media test, and got an error while doing a upgrade and also trying a clean install.
Error:
"Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Failure: repodata/comps.xml from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

any ideas on how to get past this. system is a intel 945g chipset and celeron d 64 bit.

only relevant google:

has anyone tried to install FC5 x86-64 yet? my dvd passed the disk test which Anaconda runs.

captainpete 03-21-2006 09:20 PM

I'm downloading it right now (@63%). I'll let you know how it works out for me.

victorh 03-21-2006 10:57 PM

I have installed FC5 x86-64 test3 few weeks ago, and today I upgraded to FC5. I have an Intel 915PCY motherboard and an intel 3.2 GHz EM64T processor. The installation was ok, and the system is quite stable.

About your problem, could you post the error when trying to install directly from the DVD?. In what stage it halts?. I noticed that you try to do an upgrade, give us more info on the procedure please. Maybe someone can spot the problem.

vestlink 03-22-2006 10:25 AM

I have the same problem as rottenmutt. Although i'm using x86.

I have a sata as well, but i'm trying to install it on my ata drive. I've tried to disable the sata but no difference in the result.

There's no cabled internet. Only a D-link dwl-g510 rev c1 card.

i reburnt the disk at what the media is rated at, and the (clean) install went fine. i installed to a pata drive (hda), but since the upgrade failed i lost my software raid5 array (4x 400GB SATA Seagates):( No big deal as i didn't have much on it.
i used the FC4 to download the disk then right clicked on the iso in the file manager to burn the disk, i thought the burner would only burn the disk at it's rated speed, but evidently not.
I haven't played with it much, but the 945g integrated video is supported and the sound now works, not that i care as this deviant child will be locked in the closet since it will be my firewall, router, file server, web host. (file server, will you please come out of the closet!)

I just had to activate the logical volume with:

lvchange -ay /dev/VolGrp_Raid5/LogVol_Raid5

i saw it wasn't activated with the lvm command
#lvm
lvm>lvdisplay

Where am I supposed to type this? I'm having a similar problem installing FC5 from the DVD. I get the errno message right after I set the root password. This is a clean install, but it doesn't get very far anyway.

FC5 error

I'm also a linux newbee, and the same error happened to me with both the 64 and the 32 installations. I tried the installation a lot of times and I got this same error
"Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Failure: repodata/comps.xml from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

and another one which is quiet similar

"Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Failure: repodata/repomd.xml from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

and there was a third error that happened only once. I can't remember the exact error, but I went through all steps until reaching the actual installation, and the error had something to do with a missing library.

TastyWheat 03-29-2006 10:25 AM

I'm at work and this connection is being monitored so I must reply quickly (just kidding). I won't be able to test these methods for a few hours so you other guys can get a head start. Check these threads and you might make some progress:

LVM problem System doesn't want to initialize.
Fedora fails to boot after crashing

I think we'll need to use vchange/lvchange and possibly fsck/e2fsck to fix the problem.

TastyWheat 03-29-2006 06:39 PM

I don't even think I'm heading in the right direction. I'm installing FC5 to a clean hard drive right now. vgscan and pvscan came back with no results. It doesn't make sense anyway because it's complaining about not reading what's on the DVD.

I'm going to try the individual CD installation then move on.

alan_125 03-30-2006 03:18 AM

Weird

This is weird . The 64 version always gives the error after the root password, while the 32 version gave me different errors at different places. The funny thing is that I did install the 32 bit version (TWICE) from the same DVD on my machine at work (Actually on a virtual machine using vmware).
What's more weird is that it didn't recognize the virtual SCSI drive, and didn't install, while it installed smoothly on a virtual IDE drive. I think that there might be a problem with SATA HDs (I assume that, since most of us said that we have SATA drives).

I hope you tell us what happened with the individual CDs.

Using CD media to install FC5 i386 worked perfectly fine. I still have no clue what happened with the DVD version and if I had the luxury of time I would look into it further. If one doesn't work, I suggest trying the other.

Thanks man. I'll try the CD installation soon.

I used the CDs (i386) but the same problem happened

colutti 04-01-2006 04:18 PM

Same problem

I downloaded the i386 dvd version of fedora and stored it on a fat32 filesystem. When I tried to install using HD method, it gave me the same error and aborted.

"Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Failure: repodata/repomd.xml from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

I have tried two different reburns (through fc4) and still the exact same error occurs using CD's on a fresh hard drive. I am going to try using the isopowertoy in windows to do it. has there been any progress?

ImOk 04-05-2006 08:40 PM

I've had similar types of problems with FC5 with the install from DVD on x86-32 machine. Its as if some files are corrut even though I tested the DVD. I tried it 3 times and got 3 different messages.

I guess I will have to try CDs.

alan_125 04-06-2006 03:25 AM

Funny

After facing all the problems with the DVD, I downloaded the CDs for both the x64 and the i386 installations. I tried to install from the x64 installation CD, and it failed the media test, so I checked the ISO image through a virtual installation on VMWare, and the ISO image passed the test. I burned it again, and to my wonder the new CD failed the media test. I said to hell with the media test, and started the installation anyway, and to my surprise the installation completed successfully to the end. I only had a couple of little problems:
  1. The installation didn't recognize Fedora Core 4, so I had to format instead of upgrade
  2. I didn't customize the installation, and thought that I would customize after the installation, but the add/remove software didn't work, and gave me an error after installation
  3. I thought of upgrading the system using the installation CD again, by adding the software I want, but it didn't give me an option to customize the software, and it gave me an error that I don't have enough disk space for the upgrade

I installed it again, with all the software I want, and the installation completed successfully.

ImOk 04-06-2006 08:24 AM

I am beginning to think we should wait for 5.1 or something. Where can we report these problems?

m2azer 04-18-2006 12:38 AM

I am installing fc5 using the NFS method and I was getting the same error message right after the root password

"Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been correctly generated. Failure: repodata/comps.xml from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

BUT I found out that you must copy the "repodata" folder from the CD or the DVD to your installation folder whatever that is mine is /mnt/inst and your installtion will go fine and won't get the error message.

Thanks

imperial-fusion 04-24-2006 12:41 PM

where do i copy the repodata file?? To another place on the dvd?? how do i do this?? i really need this installed soon.

Mine fails right after the root password :( i really need this up soon so if anyone can post anyhelp at all it would be so appreciated

lunlun 05-03-2006 03:06 AM

and i already tried to re-burn and re-check my dvds.

im a :newbie: so any help would be great

guenther 05-15-2006 01:46 PM

missing repodata

I'm also using the NFS install and found that the repodata directory needed to be copied from the media. It goes in a directory peer with the "Fedora" directory on the NFS file system.

stef.vanhoutte 06-01-2006 10:15 AM

yesterday, I upgraded my system from fc4 -> fc5 (x86-64 from dvd iso). I encountered following problems:
- at the end of the upgrade, I wasn't able to do a finish. I was forced to reboot and then I was in the possibility to do the finish.
- I can not open the GNOME desktop (working now in KDE)
- following soft is not longer working (as I am aware of for the moment): sound juicer cd-ripper,
rhythbox;
- after 1 (one) yum, i get the following error:
rpmdb: PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery
error: db4 error(-30977) from db->close: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery

anyone with a solution

lunlun 06-01-2006 09:23 PM

use the CDs

it works!

WINDOWS USERS SOLUTION:
Check the sha1sum of the iso files.

-find and download sha1sum (google search)
-drop the sha1sum.exe in the same directory as the iso files
-open start-run-cmd and navigate to the folder with the iso's and sha1sum.exe
-type in the command prompt
Code:

sha1sum.exe FC-5-i386-disc1.iso FC-5-i386-disc2.iso FC-5-i386-disc3.iso FC-5-i386-disc4.iso FC-5-i386-disc5.iso
-check the results against the following
Code:

cdeb3303f8c8a1fc521cd08948d727560eba488d  FC-5-i386-rescuecd.iso
43546c0e0d1fc64b6b80fe1fa99fb6509af5c0a0  FC-5-i386-disc1.iso
a85ed1ca5b63e2803f29a33ea6a6bc8eb7f63122  FC-5-i386-disc2.iso
19d87a4c5f611fa852f20e6a30bb96ead0912354  FC-5-i386-disc3.iso
ed9a852cf77250c3ae111c621d350af5c0b0a29b  FC-5-i386-DVD.iso
bea1e959dbb238773a872f70f8896905cfb7776a  FC-5-i386-disc4.iso
3966b3041620f62b5e8c8ade31b3348779cd52e9  FC-5-i386-disc5.iso

-Most likely your cd doesnt match the above, meaning you need to download that cd again, and check it again.

Use a program like "free download manager", it should help with timeout issues, etc.

ReggieQ 06-25-2006 05:24 PM

yup, had the same problems installing from the CDs, Fedora would reboot on me after i enter the root password whether i tried anaconda or the text install.

what i did was copy the 5 CD iso images to my 2nd HD (i didn't bother to download the dvd image, since i checked the hash of my files and they were all correct), copy also the /fedora directory of the first CD (just in case it needed to read the tree structure) then at the boot prompt (boot:) at the start of installation, i typed in

linux askmethod

so that it would ask me where to find the install images. i just pointed it to my 2nd HD and all worked well.

i think there's something wrong with the xml file/s, somebody ought to check that out. this is the first time i installed any flavor of linux, i hope my difficulties on this installation is not a sign of things to come.

zfmoon 09-25-2006 10:21 PM

I install fedora5, and I meet same problem ("Unable to read package metadata") after input password with you.
I reading, but I don't perfect known.

if I copy 5 CD iso images to E, and copy copy also the /fedora directory of the first CD to E root,
Now E:\
FC-5-i386-disc1.iso
FC-5-i386-disc2.iso
FC-5-i386-disc3.iso
FC-5-i386-disc4.iso
FC-5-i386-rescuecd.iso
repodata

but still "Unable to read package metadata" , where am I error?
