FC4 yum online update problem

Hi,

on a 4 CPU INTEL Xeon-based IBM server system I just did a full install (all packages) of Fedora Core 4 successfully.

After that I tried a complete online update of all packages using "yum update" (with the slightly modified
yum.conf from FedoraFAQ), but I got the following errors:

(...)
Importing Additional filelist information for dependency resolution
--> Restarting Dependency Resolution with new changes.
--> Populating transaction set with selected packages. Please wait.
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.12-1.1447_FC4 set to be installed
--> Running transaction check
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package gnbd-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1447_FC4, this is not available.
Error: Package dlm-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1447_FC4, this is not available.
Error: Package cman-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1447_FC4, this is not available.
Error: Package GFS-kernel needs /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1447_FC4, this is not available.

Thank you very much in advance for any ideas to solve this problem!

Try updating the kernel first:

yum update kernel*

Your problem seems to be similar to the one in this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=366729

Isnt updating the kernel a big deal? because "yum update kernel" doesn't seem like it is. Or is recompiling the kernel and updating it two different things? Also, is there a good chance that some of my software programs or hardware modules won't work anymore if I update?

Only updating the (binary) kernel or recompiling it (from source) are two different things.

Of course there's always some risk involved when doing a kernel update,
but you should always be able to just boot the previous (old) kernel using the grub menu
in this case.

Since a kernel update often includes some security fixes, you can't avoid it forever safely ...

Btw, a "yum update" includes a "yum update kernel*" anyway.
