FC4 - Volume bar at logon issue

I've been having a problem for awhile now in KDE 3.4. When I logon a bar pops up in the middle of the screen that says "Volume" and it won't go away. My master volume is also muted. When I try to bring the volume back up in the mixer something brings it back down again automatically.

I've narrowed it down to something that is installed in these packages:

kdeartwork
kdeaddons
kdeutils
kdegraphics

It only happens after I install those packages.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

run this in a console:

alsamixer (adjust volumes)
su

alsactl store

see if this works.
