FC4 RHN Alert Icon doesn't detect updates
 

I made a clean install of Fedora Core 4 and I found that the Red Hat Notification Icon is always ok. If run up2date, I find that there are pending updates. It's a bug on the RHN Alert icon? anyone is having the same problem?

Not really an issue, I use yum, and and chek updates frecuently.. but its nice to have things working the way they should.

I thought the idea of that icon was to indicate "critical" updates.

Of course, I am not sure what critical updates are in linux (ie. just security based updates?).

This seems to be a recurring bug with FC. I wish they would fix it once and for all. Anyway running yum or apt regularly will get you the updates.

What I liked about up2date was the option to ignore unnessacary apps. With YUM you dont have that option :(

Look at what is set up. The default is: I believe that you could include all the rest of your YUM repos there, and haave then all checked.

I'm having similar problems, and it is bugging me.

I use yum to update the system normally, but i liked it when the icon switched to an exclamation point so i knew to run "yum update", but now this is not possible, as even if there are updates available it stays a blue checkmark. BUt if i launch up2date manually, updates are listed.

I'm not very familiar with Fedora (played with FC3 a little, and just installed FC4 to try it out) but from the comments in the default /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources file it appears that the "repomd" line makes up2date look in /etc/yum.repos.d/ which implies to me that it _is_ using yum. Am I wrong?

What's more, I'm not sure this explains the problem with the notification icon. In my case at least, up2date can see that there are updates, same as yum (though it complains that they are not signed) but the RHN icon stays blue.

Anyone know if there's a fix for the icon yet? It's useful to know that there are updates waiting, whatever method (yum or up2date) is used to load them.

I beg to differ. I've already seen that article and applied that fix, which fixes up2date - but not the notification icon. I believe that they are two different things - as demonstrated by the fact that they are sometimes out of sync (something I noticed with FC3 and have seen mentioned elsewhere).

Essentially, fedora core 4 uses a modified version of up2date which supports the new yum(having the repos as files in a folder instead of just one big file) and it works quite well. However, the rhn applet has NOT been changed, and does not support the new yum.

Additionally, Up-2-date uses the yum repos to update.

I just installed FC4 today (in a "testing" partition - I'm not quite ready to upgrade my live FC3 system just yet....)

Up2date works for me (sort of) - though not the applet. However when the packages come down it appears that they are NOT signed with the GPG key. Should I be concerned about this - or just download anyway?

Why are they not signed?

Unsigned Pkgs.
 

Run yum upate from a root terminal. Yum will import the gpg keys for core, extras, and updates. Then, next time you can use yum update or up2date with no pkg not signed msgs.
