Compaq PIII dual boot w/XP. Everything works fine in XP so it's not a hardware issue. When I try to mount CD, I get this error:
"mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified."
I ran alsamixer and nothing is muted. It will not mount the CD/DVD, but will use it to install more packages. The sound test worked OK.
I'm out of ideas and would appreciate help.
What does your /etc/fstab entry look like for the CD drive? It should include the 'autofs' option.
The sound problem sounds rather mysterious, if the test works. What sound programs have you tried? Can you provide us with more information about your setup?
I think the sound problem is related to the mount problem. No mount-no sound. My biggest problem is unfamiliarity with linux. I don't know where to find the /etc/fstab entry. Where is it?
This is an older PIII with a BIOS that "fails the 1999 cutoff". FC4 is installed on a 10 gig hd with XP on the primary 4 gig hd. This installation is not finding my ethernet (netgear) card either. I can only connect to the internet on the XP drive.
GNU nano 1.3.5-cvs File: fstab
The 10th line reads
/dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,$
Does the noauto have any relation to this problem? How would I change it? You'll have to be real specific. Like go here and type this kind of specific. I'm that new.
before changing anything in fstab .. try this
login as root
and issue thsi command
#mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder
and if no errors than ... browse on to /media/cdrecorder and check if u have something there ...if u find it working ..
then .. change ur fstab something like this
/dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
and then ... issue these commands in order
#umount /dev/hdc
#mount -a
if u see ur cd thing in /media/cdrecorder .. u can stick with ur settings
