fc4 freezing because Nvidia graph
Hi,
I updated my fc4 with yum. (now update to 2.6.16 fc4). My fc4 freezes immediately after i enter my gui. The screen begins doing strange things before it freezes. One touch and it freezes. I had this problem before. Then a friend, who is now away for a long holiday, solved the problem. When it worked i saw the nvidia 'driver' appearing on my screen while starting up. Now not anymore !!
As i tried, i can only get into grub. When i start up in X-save mode, i can work with the console for one minute, then it freezes. Reinstalling fc4 is not an issue, it would give the same problem (did it before).
My system parameters are : AMD Athlon processor 1.30 GHz, 256 MB RAM, ASUS Via A7V8X-X motherboard and a Nvidia Geforce graphical card.
Is there here somewhere an expert ??
greetz Cony
ps : no experts of fc here?????? I'm disappointed....really not one who knows it ?

sThanks
hi,
i got a lot of help from this website, although i'm sure others had the same problem or can have that same problem. I was more then three weeks without my own computer and finally my friend came back from holiday and told me how to solve this problem : thanks to you all !!!
Because i don't want to keep the solution of such problem for myself, here i write down the neccesary steps to follow:
because i updated the kernel and i work with an ASUS motherboard and NVIDIA card, the graphical driver has to be reinstalled. Do these things:
- start with the old kernel if possible (press a buttom)
- when started do not yet login !!
- press ctrl+alt+F1 to go to terminal
- login as root
- nano /etc/inittab
- you see somewhere id:5:initdefault:
- change 5 in 3
- ctrl+X and save
- ctrl+alt+delete (start up again)
- the pc will only start the terminal now
- login as root
- cd /home/personaldir
- ./NVIDIA <TAB> 8 <ENTER>
- do everything he asks
- when finished he asks to adapt xorg.conf, you can do that
- nano /etc/inittab
- change the 3 again into 5 (see above)
- restart the pc with ctrl+alt+delete
So, i hope for those who would ever have the same problem, this is the solution
and yes, experts in fc, there are non on this site

Better would be to read the "sticky" comment at the start of the Fedora thread, and follow the advice you find there re the nVidia drivers available from the livna repository.
Note that the advice from Cony assumes that you've downloaded the nVidia code from the nVidia web site, and that you've installed the kernel headers and the gcc compiler.
