FC3 (with recent kernel update) CUPS problem
I searched the forum and found only a little help so here is the problem:
Just used up2date to get the latest kernel. There were other updates available as well but it was hanging when i tried to do them all so i went to only the kernel first. On reboot the system hangs when starting CUPS. I did an interactive boot and canceled the CUPS load and configured the new kernel with ntfs RPMs and updated the rest (including CUPS). I thought this would have fixed it but alas, still hangs on CUPS. Is there a way round this anyone knows of? Or even a way to stop it trying to load CUPS every startup? thanks in advance david ________________________ www.davidmcelroy.4t.com |
I've been having the exact same problem. Has anyone come up with a solution?

I'm also having a similar CUPS problem with FC3. I'm using a remote HP 1200 that is hosted on an FC2 machine. Through some series of software updates through the standard Fedora and Fedora Extras repositories (not sure exactly which updates, though both kernel and cups have been updated) my FC3 machine no longer sees the remote printer. A different FC2 machine on the same network has no problem. None of these machines employees a firewall.

removing cups
I tried reinstalling foomatic from the linux rescue and it didn't do the trick.
I did manage to get rebooted back into the desktop by renaming: /etc/init.d/cups /etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd Once back in the system, (and quite releived) I tried to force the package install again, which didn't work. So I tried rpm -e foomatic-3.0.2-3.i386.rpm and it said the package is not installed. So logically, I tried rpm -i foomatic-3.0.2-3.i386.rpm and it said the package is already installed. I'm pretty sure that killed my printing, but since I don't print from this machine, it doesn't matter to me. The important part is that it got me back into the desktop, and if necessary, I can fix printing another day. Anyone know how to help get the folks who need printing to get past this point? --Shultis |
