FC3 No Sound As User Works As Root

I have a relatively fresh fc3 install, updated everything using yum. When I run xmms as root, sound works. When I run it as a user I get the error message Please check that your soundcard is configured properly, you have the correct output plugin selected No other program is blocking the soundcard.

When I run the sound card detection utility as a user it prompts me for root password and the test sound plays. When I run xmms and try to play a sound I get the error message.

When I try to play a sound file using Rythmbox I get the error Could not access Also device "default", check its permission.

Any suggestions on how to get sound to work as a regular user?

go to volume control under the sound and video section and see if you have anything muted.

also

what sound file are you trying to play and what plugin do you have selected?

I'm trying to play a flac file and I have the xmms-flac plugin. Just for kicks I tried a wav file and get the same error. For sound output I'm using the alsa output, though I've tried setting it to esound and oss and get the same error. Alsa output in xmms is configured the same under my user as it is under root (default settings). I haven't checked the mixer settings because the problem isn't that xmms is playing and no sound is coming out. The problem is xmms and rhythmbox give an error when trying to play an audio file.
