FC3 and FC4 unbelievably slow at times

I have a had a problem with fedora on this specific computer. I am dual booting with win 2k.
I have a p4 2.8gh processor. Is there something I have done wrong? It will work for a little while and then start freezing for a second or 2 then work fine. If I yum install something it is crazy slow. I have FC4 setup on a different (less powerfull)computer at home and it blazes. Has anyone had this problem before. Thanks

I have 512 ram . I think I might have figured it out though. I went to the bookstore looking for python books and I saw one book about linux solving problems or some sort of topic like that. And I found that there is a program called prolink or something like that. So thanks for replying though. Then I saw some of the commands to get the info and stuff like that . I knew top but didn't think of trying that.
Thanks!

oh I don't know sounds good both ways ctkroeker.
I was reading that book and it said that a guy was having a problem with it slowing down at a certain time everyday and it turned out to be some prolink program . It ran daily to update something? Yeh , when I use yum it slows down. When I copy stuff from cd it slows down too. Right now I still trying to get samba working. What is the command for the gui?
