FC22 Update To Mate Panel And Mate-desktop Prevents Logout
I am currently running FC22 on my laptop, have for years. I have frequently gotten messages saying that
mate-panel crashed. The other day I decided to see if there was an update for it, and went ahead and updated
mate-panel and mate-desktop. Now, none of the logout buttons work. The only way to log out is to get the PID
of mate-session and kill it. I'm looking for a way to fix this issue. Any ideas?

Excuse me? FC22 is Fedora 22, right? Its support ended in July 2016, and it doesn't get any updates since then. From where have you gotten those Mate updates?

I would prefer not to update to Fedora 33. I have a lot of tools installed on this machine and I am actively using it in consulting work that I have going on. I suppose
worst case I can pull the installation DVD out and put back the original versions.
Then maybe CentOS 7? It's based on Fedora 19 and supported until 2024. To compare, this is what I get on a CentOS 7 system:

Sure, CentOS 7 base+extras+epel still amount to only slightly over half the number of packages that you get from fedora, but third-party repos can somewhat alleviate the need.
I'm still curious as to where do you get the updates from and how do you get them.
As I said above, FC22 packages don't get any updates since 2016.
DNF still works with the repositories I listed. Unfortunatly, when I try to undo the update, it complains that
the libraries it wants to go back to are not available. So downgrading the files is not possible. I really don't
want to try upgrading to a newer OS. In the first place my internet connection consists of something akin to
a tin can at the end of a string, so it can take a couple weeks to pull an iso down. In the second place, I really
can't afford the time right now to do the update and fix issues that are a result of it. I wasn't aware that
support for 22 had stopped so long ago. I guess one option is to install 33 on an external drive, get everything
running as time permits, and when the kinks are worked out, move it over to the main drive. It's a dual boot
system that has a windoze side. I recall having to play games with the UEFI garbage to get 22 installed.

One way around libraries not available is to navigate to the repository directly (check out the appropriate repo file in /etc/yum.repos.d for the URL) to see if what you need is still somewhere in the system - perhaps in the actual distro repo and not in the updates repo.
