fc2 running fast!

Hi

i just get a fresh install of fedora core 2 on a partition and with my slowy computer it runs like shit.... and for the moment im on 56k internet so i cant download anything else.

I want so tips and tweaks that i could do to make fedora run faster.

I very like gnome but i think that if it continues to run like this i'll change it for fluxbox, cause when i was running on fluxbox, nothing was slow...

So thanks for your future tips!

Yes - a lighter window manager would be a good option - in addition, might be an idea to disable any uneeded services:

System settings - Server settings - Services

Why not use XFCE as your window manager...it comes with FC2. It is very light on system resources, yet it still has a KDE/GNOME feel to it...very good combination.

If you didn't do a full install of Fedora Core 2 you won't have XFCE installed. Do a google search to find out how to install XFCE from your fedora core 2 CD-ROMS....all you have to do is copy 10 or so RPMS off disks 3 and 4 and install. Very easy.

I am a home user and use my pc to surf internet, play music, movies, composing and many other daily use things and I stop all serves in "system-config-services". And still my FC2 is running excellently and I feel no problem.

I get battered on a daily basis from alot of my friends in the linux community about using fedora due to the slow kernels that they are posting which really didn't bother me until I tried a new kernel. I went to linux-militia.net just looking for some doom3 how to's and found a kernel they have posted on the front page. I figured I would just give it a try and I will be damned but that kernel literly cut my compile times in half and added about 30 fps in my games. I suggest everyone give it a try. Being not the best at linux I had a admin give me steps on how to do this. They are posting a how to tonight to do this in fedora I really urge you guys to give it a try and see the performance increase. Its really nutty how much faster it is.Its called the ck performance kernel you will find it and the how to in the upper left hand of the site. www.linux-militia.net

I am told the how to will be up in a hour.

Hmm.. I will give that "Performance Kernel" a try tonight. I play UT2k4 and AA all the time.
Have you had any luck with the Loki installers for MoH:AA?

GOD i love that game

The thing to remember about Kernels is the ones you get from Fedora are made so basically everyone can use them. This means that they are loaded up with crap you in particular may not need. They have compatibility in mind...not performance. There are plenty other kernel choices out there which you would probably be much better off with then the Redora kernels. It's just nice for newbies IMHO because atleast they have a pretty much guarenteed working kernel to go back on if they screw up their custom kernel.

maveric7911 09-02-2004 09:57 AM

exactly. My group has tried a ton of kernels but this one seems to be pushing out way better results then all the rest. Thats why we wrote a easy how to so even newbs can get good performance out of their box. As for the loki installers there is alot of people in the irc room connected with our groups site that know and run all of that. The info is posted at www.linux-militia.net
