FC2, problems with XServer, GRUB, sound and eth0
I'm a linux newbie, so forgive me for incompetence, but my 4 major problems with Fedora Core 2 I recently installed on my Dell Precision are as follows (and PLEASE direct me to similar threads if you know of ones):
1) Intenet connection seems to give "connection failed" message roughly 50% of the times on the start-up. I've a terrayon tj715 external cable modem installed in Win XP by Comcast, and I didn't install any driver in linux for it, it seemed to recognize the divice and run it somehow. At some point in the boot, every once in a great while system used to ask me if I want to keep my configs for it, to which I said yes. Now internet works in linux, (this thread is an evidence), but with great unreliability, less than or 50% of the times, and I'm not sure whether it depends if I use linux or Windows OS right before, or if I re-boot, cold boot or shut down "dirty" before. In the hardware browser it says "driver: unknown" for my modem
2) X Server has tendecy to freeze for 1-2 seconds (mouse & keaboard) on me once in a while. I tried to find driver for my ATI Rage 128 Ultra Pro video card, but nothing on ATI website for this videocard (only Radeons). Sometimes these "hick-ups" last longer that several seconds, and I'm forced to shut down the comp.
3) Upon log-out, shutdown, system freezes at "unmounting filessystem, sending kill, sending term step"s and I have to pull the plug, although sometimes it shuts down normally. Also sometimes there's the same problem on re-boot., and rarely on load-up graphical log window freezes.
4) Sound test failed during installation and when I try to test it inside the account, it fails. Don't know how to configure.
I'm not too familiar with linux's inner workings, so I didn't dare to tinker with kernels or X being affraid to mess it up even worse. Any help is greatly appreciated.
