FC2 messes up sound, file sharing and hangs on occasion!

Hi!

Recently I installed FC2 on my pIII 450MHz, 300MB RAM computer. For some reasons this distribution has caused nothing but trouble since. Actually, I had to reinstall at least 2 times due to malfunctioning boot loader etc.

Well. So, now I'm up and running, and there are several issues I can't find answers to anywhere.

1) My sound system is initialised during boot "initialising peripherals". This I know because a loud noise is produced from that moment on. I have tried to do alsamixer but that lead to no effect. The noise is very loud, and clearly audible even when my loudspeakers are turned off! (They came with power off button). The only solution to this frustrating noise, was to simply detach the speakers. Well, I'm kind of fond of music, so please, could someone take a wild guess as for what could be wrong?

I have soundcard: Vendor=Ensonic: model=5880 AudioPCI: Module=snd-ens1371

All modules are loaded I guess, since it is possible to play and listen to music, if it weren't for that darn background noise!

Well, not really actually. XMMS tells me sometimes that the soundcard is not properly configured, or that device is busy. This always happens between songs, but if I just ignore it, and click on the next song, it works perfectly fine.

2) I have a p2p-program, dcgui-qt-0.3.1, which, for some reason is affected in several ways of this OS. I can not search user files unless the firewall is disabled. I have tried to allow traffic through the search-port in the firewall settings, as for 1413:udp (as recommended by the Help) but it is the same problem still!
Another very confusing thing is that I configured my dcgui to have font size 9 everywhere, BUT when my screensaver is supposed to* kick in, it changes the values for the font size!! So everytime I return to the computer and make the black screen disappear, I also have to reset the font size in dcgui!

3) *As for the screen saver. It wont start. The screen just goes pitch black.

4) The system hangs on occasion. Sometimes it takes forever to get going such a simple command as "emacs profile". I have tried "top" to find out what's eating my CPU, but I find nothing there. The most demanding is X, about 7% cpu usage. Once I had to wait several minutes for the "start menu" (that is, the red hat menu!) to pop up.

These are a bunch of questions, and I would be happy as... well...anyway.. if someone could please help me with these issues!

I'm not sure this is much help, But I have the same sound card and the same issue with XMMS getting blocked. I had two sound cards in my machine. One was the Ensoniq and one is an onboard Ac97 model. I fixed the issue by removing the Ensoniq and using the onboard w/ Alsa drivers. I know there is probably a better way to do this, but it worked in a pinch.

Let me know if you find a better way
