FC2 64bit and sound

Here's a good one.
I can play my CDs and DVDs using Xine. The sound though turned up all the way is still pretty low. However no other app will use the sound. None of the players that come with the OS has sound. They play but no sound comes out. I go to the sound card detector and it sees the card but even it doesnt make a sound when i play the test.
Any ideas?
