FC-8. How do I turn off the "xxx updates available" banner?

Hi Folks ~

I have an older pc and turn it on/off daily. Each time FC-8 boots, I get a menu bar banner that tells me how many 'security upgrades' are awaiting my approval to be installed.
Because it's old and space is limited (and because these are NOT security related) and because I don't use half of the tools that are getting updated, I want to turn OFF those silly download requests. Any suggestions, greatly appreciated.

Go to Control panel, where under the system category there would be an option regarding updates. You can make changes there.

Hi,

Open a terminal, type system-config-services (you'll be prompted to enter root's password), search for yum-updatesd and disable it.
