FC 2 not detecting soundcard
I just installed Fedora Core 2 after using Core 1 for about 6 months and now I have no sound. FC 2 is not detecting my sound card at all. I repartitioned and did a fresh install of FC 2. All of my hardware (modem, video card, monitor, etc.) was automatically detected and configured properly except for the sound card.
I have run the Soundcard Detection applet in the System Settings menu and it says no soundcard is present. If I try to open the mixer an error box pops up saying "no mixer elements and/or sound devices found. I've checked the option to start sound server on startup and nothing works.
As a test I reinstalled FC 1 and sure enough FC 1 detects the soundcard and automatically configures it. Reinstalled FC 2 and no sound card can be detected.
It's a cheapo no-name soundcard with a Crystal chipset.
Is there any way to setup the soundcard manually to make it work with FC 2?
Thanks for any help,
ajz

Did u in anyway change your computer or install anything involving the sound card? If no try looking in the BIOS to see if anything went wrong in there.

I didn't change anything, that's what I don't understand. FC1 detects my card as a Sound Blaster and configures it properly.
Using FC 1 I downloaded and burned the FC2 ISOs and installed. I didn't change any hardware or touch the BIOS in any way, I just burned the ISOs and installed. FC2 will not detect my soundcard. FC2 automatically configures all my other hardware and works great except for my soundcard.
I hopped in the car, drove to Circuit City, and bought a genuine Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live card and it would not detect that either. I returned it 3 hours later and got a refund.
I just don't know what to think or do. I know I'll never go back to Windows. If anything I'll just revert back to FC1.

Try passing the following as a boot option:
pci=noacpi

I just happened to be reading an article today reviewing SuSE Linux and in the article I read this:
"With the system that I installed it on, everything worked just fine except for the audio--which I found out later was not the fault of the hardware or SuSE. It seems that ALSA, or the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture package, is not working correctly yet with Kernel 2.6. This can be fixed by using an older kernel or just waiting on a new version of ALSA."
I know that FC2 uses the 2.6 kernel so this is maybe the problem? So can I install FC2 with a differnet sound system go back to the 2.4 kernel? If so, how can I do either of these things?

What happens when you run "alsaconf"? This command may be in /usr/sbin. Try it and see if it finds your card.
Cheers,

I got it working
Well, I found my problem. I discovered that I didn't have any sound system installed. I'm so dumb I just wanna die!
When I installed Fedora Core 2 I selected the complete install which is supposed to install all programs on all the CDs with all options and all RPMs. Apparently this "complete" install does not include any sound support.
I downloaded and installed alsa and ran alsaconf. My soundcard was detected and setup with no problem. So I am now a happy FC2 user with my sound back.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my post.
A special thanks to Ross Clement who suggest I run alsaconf. I couldn't find alsaconf anywhere in the file system and this is what got me thinking alsa wasn't even installed.

How did you figure out that you didn't have a sound system install on FC2?
Where would I look since I have no sound on my box?
Thanks in advance!

Following Ross Clements advice I tried to run alsaconf and it was nowhere on my system.
From a command line try to run /usr/sbin/alsaconf as root. If the program isn't there you need to download and install ALSA. (Or install it off the CDs)
