F7 Live Cd's for test 3 and 4
To satisfy my curiosity I downloaded both test 3 and 4 live CD's. Both worked well on my laptop and my old IBM NetVista but when I tried them on my Dell desktop where I have Fedora 6 running with no problems, both disks go through the whole list of start ups but when they reach the point where the change to desktop background and the install services window is supposed to appear, all I get on the screen is a slowly moving box saying "Input not supported" and the whole process seems to continue internally but nothing else happens on the screen.
This is no big deal but does anyone have a possible explanation. Just wondering.

That "Input not supported" is a message from your monitor, not Fedora. It usually means that the frequency that the X software specified on your video card is not supported by your monitor. This usually happens for two reasons:
- Your monitor does not have EDID support, and the default value the system selected is incompatible with your monitor, or
- Your monitor provided EDID, but it lied. There are several manufacturers that provided displays with incorrectly programmed EDID PROMs.
Try switching monitors before booting. If that works, you'll need to manually configure the resolution and frequency values from the manufacturer's information for the specific model of monitor to use the one that's not working.

Thank you for your assistance.
I do not have another monitor available to try what you suggest but I am puzzled by the fact that my monitor (a new Acer wide screen LCD model) works well with the Fedora 6 installed on the Dell machine but not with the F7 live CDs. Would changing from Fedora 6 to Fedora 7 make a change of frequency necessary? I also plug this monitor into the IBM desktop and it displays the two F7 live programs with no problems.
As you may guess from my confusion that I am not that familiar with technology involved but I appreciate your attempt to satisfy my curiosity. Thank you.
Ron

FC6 and FC7 use different version of X, and those versions probably have different fallbacks. There may also be an interaction between the video card and monitor that is causing a problem, which is why the monitor works on one machine but not another. For example, the monitors reported default values may be beyond a maximum supported by one of the video cards. In one case then the reported EDID can be used, while in the other a fallback must be used - for the same monitor.
You can try Googling for the specific model of monitor to try to find a sample /etc/X11/xorg.conf that you can use in place of the default that is being created.

I got it working. I logged in at run level 3 superuser and brought up the "xorg.conf" file. There was no mouse section, no monitor section, and the screen section did not show any modes. I copied the required information from the xorg.conf file from my working fedora 6 program, ran "startx" on a new server and away it went.
With your help, you just made a 78 year old man very happy. Thanks again

Did the startup tell you the model of video driver? It could be that the driver chosen is wrong.
In the startup parameters, I believe you can specify a resolution, chose, 800 x 600 or the 1024 x 768
resolution values.

Just for the record, I cannot run xen. XEN and X windows are incompatible. I did get it partially to work for a few minutes before a hardware lockup occurred.
My normal driver which locks up immediately is the i810
the one that allowed me to work for a few minutes was the intel
I cannot tell you the difference between them.

Actually, I was referring to X problems of a similar nature that Roncum experienced.
Somewhere beginning last november 2006, X changed for the worse. Before that change, I was able to run XEN. When the xorg updates for November were applied, no more XEN. The system would lock up after the boot, but when the logon screen was presented.
And the Unity Respin DVD that was produced for January 2007, had the cumulative updates, so using that DVD to restore did restore the X windows problem.
Now, with FC7 test4, and the identical system, I the list of resolutions has increased from what was presented for FC6. And I was unable to move the FC6 Xorg to Fc7 or visa versa.
Without XEN all is OK.
