External drive seen in Mint but not Fedora 14

I have a computer with an Asus M2N68-AM plus mother board running Fedora 14 that will not show external usb flash drives or hard drives when I plug them in. I used to run Linux Mint 9 on this computer and switched to Fedora because of easier LVM support out of the box. Mint would mount these devices just fine.

To simplify the issue and rule out anything I did since the installation, I tested this on both the Mint 9 live DVD and Fedora 14 live cd (both 32-bit versions, if that makes a difference) with the same results.

Just to be clear, I'm still somewhat new to Linux. I'm reasonably sure it's an issue with seeing the devices in the first place and not just an auto-mounting problem, but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

In Fedora, look at the output of (as root)
Code:

fdisk -l
This will list your drives will show you if the system is seeing the drive.

It'll be something like
Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders, total 312581808 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x64a71fe8

Device Boot      Start        End      Blocks  Id  System
/dev/sda1  *          1      80324      40162  83  Linux
/dev/sda2          80325    5205059    2562367+  82  Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3        5205060    23647679    9221310  83  Linux
/dev/sda4        23647680  312576704  144464512+  83  Linux

Disk /dev/sdc: 3926 MB, 3926949888 bytes
16 heads, 16 sectors/track, 29960 cylinders, total 7669824 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xc3072e18

Device Boot      Start        End      Blocks  Id  System
/dev/sdc1  *        8064    7669823    3830880    b  W95 FAT32

In this case, I can see my USB stick as /dev/sdc.

If there were a USB drive plugged in, there would be another, most likely /dev/sdb listed.

You can also look at the output of dmesg. Start watching dmesg and then plug in the drive.
Code:

watch "dmesg | tail -20"
Normally you would see something like
Code:

[58218.551530] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0
[58218.966671] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] 7669824 512-byte logical blocks: (3.92 GB/3.65 GiB)

Aright, I ran "fdisk -l" and saw only my internal drives and my lvm volume group.

Code:

When re-entered the command as "fdisk -l > disk.txt" to have something I could keep (and post), the usb flash drive I was testing spontaneously mounted as sdc.

Using the your second suggestion of watch "dmesg | tail -20", I tried this a few more times. The attached thumbnail is an example of what was scrolling by during the long delay until it mounted.

My usb 3.0 external hard drive will not mount at all, either using my usb 3.0 card, or the same usb 2.0 port I used the flash drive in:

Looks like USB 3.0 is disabled in Fedora 14 by default.

boris152 05-15-2011 07:49 PM

I think the USB 3.0 thing is something of red herring. It would explain why nothing would happen on the 3.0 ports, but I'm talking about the regular 2.0 ports here. I do appreciate the help, though.

boris152 05-15-2011 08:00 PM

Alright, I got it working. I googled the error codes from dmesg and came across this: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/list...oo/user/190517

When I plugged my drive (incidentally USB powered) into the rear USB 2.0 ports directly on the motherboard, it worked immediately. It seems there is a power draw issue with the ports at the front of the case. Your info about the USB 3.0 ports being disabled in Fedora explains why it wouldn't work there, so I was dealing with two different issues.

Thanks for your help, and thanks for teaching me a few more tricks in the terminal. I might make a decent Linux user yet! :)
