ethernet not seen after power up - fc12 on t61p
 

I just installed fc12 (64 bit) on a t61p laptop. If the ethernet is connected when the laptop is powered up, it is seen and is present in the network configuration hardware profile. If I wait until the machine is booted before I connect it, it isn't present. How do I make it so that I can connect the ethernet at any time?

Except for this minor nit, everything else worked perfectly right out of the box.

When active, is this interface assigned a dynamic IP address by a DHCP?

Yes, it is configured through DHCP. My other linux box doesn't behave this way. If ethernet is disconnected at startup, the interface will appear as inactive, but there. I can then just activate it. This doesn't even appear unless it was connected at powerup.

Most likely, you can get the effect you are looking for once you connect the ethernet cable by invoking /sbin/dhcpcd as root.

I am not very familiar with fedora's startup scripts, but it is likely looking for a DHCP somewhere in the startup and not finding it, then not bringing up the interface at all nor running dhcpcd.

(/sbin/dhcpd is the "DHCP Client Daemon.")
